Police arrested a drunken man armed with a knife as he tried to enter the National Assembly Wednesday.

Police said Thursday that the man, surnamed Kim, 53, tried to enter the Assembly campus in a taxi about 10 p.m. Gate guards called police after they discovered Kim was carrying a knife.

Kim said he planned to scare lawmakers, including the conservative opposition Liberty Korea Party member Na Kyung-won and independent member Lee Jung-hyun.

Na and Lee are critical of the liberal government backing President Moon Jae-in. They belonged to the party that backed former President Park Geun-hye, who was impeached. She was sentenced in April to 24 years' prison on various corruption charges.
