K-pop act releases 6th mini album
By Kwak Yeon-soo
Six-member K-pop act GFriend have released their sixth mini album "Time for the moon night," vowing to take a bolder step to go beyond its powerful-yet-innocent beauty concept.
Their new album consists of eight songs. The title track "Time for the moon night" is a whimsical dance song with a lyrical melody and dynamic tempo. It offers introspective lyrics and honest storytelling.
"We thought about changing the concept about us. We're depicted as girls with innocent beauty with uniform-inspired looks," GFriend member Sowon said during a press showcase at YES24 Live Hall in eastern Seoul, Monday.
Inspired by feelings of warm spring, the album also features the vivacious up-tempo beat of "Love Bug," the deep, retro synth-pop sound of "Flower Garden," the funky music with Nu-disco beat "Tik Tik," the sad ballad of "Bye," and the sentimental fan song "You Are My Star."
"We want to set a new direction toward producing thought-provoking and sentimental music. In that sense, the night concept matches well with our objective," Umji said.
"We changed our style and makeup to have a lovely French-style mood that matches our dreamlike concept," Yerin said.
As the six members of GFriend are well-known for their dance moves, they showed confidence in their new choreography. "There is a choreography that has all members rolling and swinging our arms in sweeping gestures. We don't have an official name for it, but hope our fans or reporters will give it a name," SinB said.
GFriend recently announced its official colors ― cloud dancer, scuba blue, and ultraviolet ― to solidify their identity and acquire wide fandom.
Meanwhile, "Time for the moon night" topped iTunes World Albums chart in Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dominican Republic and Norway. The album also peaked at first place on iTunes K-pop charts in Japan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Finland and Netherlands.
"We are so thankful to our international fans who give unwavering support," Yuju said. "We are in the midst of an Asia tour, and we are set to make a debut in Japan in May."
When asked what charms would appeal to Japanese audiences, Umji said "Maybe powerful choreography… and the pairing of Japanese and music in songs sound beautiful."
Since their start in 2015, GFriend have rapidly risen to become one of the most prominent girl groups of this K-pop generation. Their hit songs include "Glass Bead" (2015), "Me Gustas Tu" (2015) and "Rough" (2016).
