The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Monday that it will receive complaints from franchise shop owners about any unfair treatment by their franchiser companies in August.
The city government's effort is in line with the Fair Trade Commission which recently launched a campaign to crack down on abusive "mother companies." Franchisees often suffer financial damage due to such abuse.
Complaints from the shop owners are not new. Common ones include the pressure to pay for brand advertisements without franchisers letting them know how the money was spent, and to redo interior design in the shop periodically despite no need to do so, and the termination of contracts for reasons not in the terms and conditions.
The city has received complaints for years but had no authority to investigate them. The city hopes more victims will come forward and speak honestly about their relations. The city will offer legal assistance to the worst victims and report their cases to the Fair Trade Commission for investigation.
