    Clerk stops suicide attempt

A convenience store clerk prevented a suicide attempt by a man in his 20s, according to Goseong police.

The clerk at the store in Gangwon Province called police after finding a customer bought ignition coal, duct tape and liquor ― suggesting a the items might be aids for asphyxiation.

Police found the man at a nearby travel lodge, where he was in the middle of his bid to kill himself. He was sent back to his family.

"We saved a valuable life due to the report from a convenience store in the area," a police official said.

"Residents there have been maintaining a good relationship with us."

College student dies after food contest

Naju city police have accepted a case file where a female student was found dead at a college freshman orientation on Thursday.

The woman, 23, was found unconscious inside a bathroom stall at a recreation resort in the South Jeolla Province city.

She was rushed to a hospital, but was pronounced dead soon after.

Police confirmed that she went to the bathroom after complaining she felt something lodged in her throat after participating in an eating contest.

"She participated in the game a few minutes ago," said one of the students who found her.

"After we saw her unconscious in the bathroom stall, we called 119."

In the evening freshman orientation, where 350 college students and 19 professors participated, some students volunteered to see who could eat a pie or a bowl of ramen fastest.

Police believed the woman, who had no record of particular traumas or illnesses, died due to an airway obstruction.
