BTS, Big Hit's UNICEF fundraising hits $1.4 million

A fundraising project of K-pop sensation BTS and UNICEF Korea to eradicate violence against children and minors has reached 1.6 billion won ($1.4 million), according to UNICEF Korea Friday.

BTS, Big Hit Entertainment and UNICEF Korea have been holding an event in Sinchon, Seoul, from Nov. 1-4 to celebrate the first anniversary of the "LOVE MYSELF" project, which is a part of UNICEF's "#END violence" campaign.

The event highlighted the global activities of UNICEF to root out child abuse and included a video message from BTS.

"I was overwhelmed after hearing BTS's U.N. speech in September," Lee Ki-cheol, the secretary general of UNICEF Korea, said. "On that night, I bumped into a diplomat who told me that Korea has made two great accomplishments during the past 60 years ― democratization and industrialization and production of BTS."

He added, "I could realize how much BTS's campaign has been giving hope and good influence to people and how much it has enhanced the national prestige."

The group recently returned home after a hectic overseas schedule. BTS will perform with American singer Charlie Puth at the 2018 MGA awards on Nov. 6 in Incheon and is set to tour Japan beginning Nov. 13.
