Prosecutors have summoned actor Ha Jung-woo for questioning in an ongoing for alleged illegal use of propofol, an intravenous short-acting anesthetic.
The prosecution recently questioned him, focusing on allegations he got around 10 shots of the milky sedative drug without proper prescriptions at a plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam, southern Seoul, between January and September, 2019. Investigators say Ha got the shots with prescriptions issued to his younger brother and manager.
The Seoul Central Prosecutors' Office, in charge of the case, will soon decide on his indictment.
The actor reportedly denied the allegations, claiming getting the shots was part of legitimate medical treatment for skin trouble. His agency disclosed text messages between Ha and his primary doctor as evidence. The agency added that getting the shots with the fake prescriptions was the clinic's request.
Propofol is a controlled substance that has been classified as illegal when used for any other purposes than surgical treatment. However, it has been abused by many celebrities and business bigwigs, due to comparably easier access and quicker recovery from anesthesia.
Ha, who debuted in the 2002 romance film "Madeleine," is known for his macho, masculine roles in blockbusters like "Take Point" (2018) and "Along with the Gods" (2017).
He began widening his involvement in the film industry, making his directorial debut with the comedy "Fasten Your Seatbelt" (2003). He has also produced numerous films including "A Single Rider" (2016) and "Ashfall" (2019).
