Korean-American rapper Jessi revealed Wednesday that she was a racism victim while living in the U.S.
"There were hardly any Asians in the region where I lived in the U.S. I was alone," the rapper, whose Korean name is Ho Hyun-ju, said on MBC talk show "Radio Star."
She was born in New York, grew up in New Jersey and came to Korea when she was 15 years old.
"A boy made fun of me for four years for me being an Asian," she said. "After four years, I finally fought back, although I was aware that fighting against someone is not always right. He left me alone after that."
She added: "Violence is not the key, but we need to have our voice. In fact, I have been 'noisy' since I was born."
Jessi debuted in 2005 with the album "Get Up" and has garnered popularity for her strong and independent style.
