GEORGE: Hey. Hungry?
ERIN: Am I ...? What are they doing here? I just went to pick them up.
GEORGE: Yeah, she came by about an hour ago and said something came up and she had to drop the kids off.
ERIN: Something came up? Why didn’t she call me at work?
GEORGE: Ah ... I don’t know. She ... I was ... she ... I don’t know ... that ... why.
ERIN: That stupid bitch!
MATTHEW: Mom!
ERIN: Sorry. I just can’t believe she dumps my kids off when nobody’s home.
GEORGE: I was home. We’re fine. Seriously. We cooked some burgers, had some milk.
MATTHEW: Want a hot dog? There’s an extra one on the grill. Or a cheeseburger or a hamburger?
KATIE: But this mustard is slippery.
MATTHEW: Mom, what do you think about me getting a tattoo?
아이들: 안녕, 엄마!
조 지: 안녕. 시장해요?
에 린: 내가…? 애들이 왜 여기 있죠? 막 데리러 갔었는데.
조 지: 보모가 한 시간 전에 들러 일이 있다며 애들을 차로 데려다 주어야 한다고 말했어요.
에 린: 일이 있다고요? 왜 나한테 직장으로 전화도 안 했지?
조 지: 나도 모르죠. 아마도… 그 이유를 모르겠어요.
에 린: 나쁜 년!
매 튜: 엄마!
에 린: 미안해. 집에 아무도 없는데 애들을 버리고 가다니 믿을 수 없군.
조 지: 내가 있었어요. 우린 괜찮아요. 정말로. 햄버거 구워서 우유랑 먹였어요.
매 튜: 핫도그 먹을래? 석쇠에 하나 남았어. 아니면 치즈버거나 햄버거는 어때?
케이티: 한데 겨자가 미끄덩거려.
매 튜: 엄마, 나 문신 새기는 거 어떻게 생각해?
Erin smiles.
에린이 미소짓는다.
31. INT. ERIN’S HOUSE. NIGHT
George plays cards with the children.
31. 내부. 에린의 집. 밤
조지는 아이들과 카드놀이를 하고 있다.
MATTHEW: One, two, three.
매 튜: 하나, 둘, 셋.
They put down some cards on the table.
그들은 테이블 위에 카드를 내려놓는다.
GEORGE: Hey!
MATTHEW: I got all these kings. You win. You got a joker.
조 지: 이봐!
매 튜: 내가 킹을 다 가졌으니까 아저씨가 이겼어요. 조커를 가졌잖아요.
Erin comes in quietly and watches them from the door.
에린이 조용히 들어와 문에서 그들을 바라본다.
MATTHEW: King. Joker. You stole a joker!
KATIE: Haha.
MATTHEW: You cheat!
GEORGE: (laughs) What do you mean, I cheat?
KATIE: You’re cheating! Get another one.
ERIN: Time to go to bed. Excuse me. Get ready for bed. Brush your teeth.
MATTHEW: Okay. Play tomorrow?
GEORGE: Yeah.
매 튜: 킹. 조커. 조커를 훔쳤어요!
케이티: 하하.
매 튜: 아저씨가 속였어요!
조 지: (웃는다) 내가 속이다니, 무슨 말이야?
케이티: 속였잖아요! 다른 거 집어요.
에 린: 잘 시간이야. 그만. 잘 준비해. 이빨 닦고 .
매 튜: 네. 내일도 할 거죠?
조 지: 그래.
They pat each other’s hands. Matthew and Katie get up.
그들은 서로의 손을 친다. 매슈와 케이티는 일어선다.
GEORGE: Good night, buddy.
KATIE: Good night.
MATTHEW: Good night.
GEORGE: Good night.
KATIE: What’s that?
GEORGE: This? This is a Harley-Davidson. It’s the best damn motorcycle ever made.
ERIN: And if I ever catch either one of you near one, I’ll knock you silly.

The children start to hop their way upstairs.

해설
에린과 조지의 대화에서 네이티브 스피커들끼리 구사하는 생생한 구어체 영어표현을 엿볼 수 있다. 예상치 못했던 상황에서 조지를 만났기 때문에 에린은 “What are they doing here?”라고 말을 시작했고 “I just went to pick them up.”이라고 설명을 한다. 조지는 and를 사용해서 3문장으로 상황 서령을 끝내는데 “Yeah, she came by about an hour ago and said something came up and she had to drop the kids off.”다. 여기서 come by, drop by는 ‘들르다’고 come up은 ‘~한 일이 발생하다’ 즉 happen, occur, take place의 의미다.
열 받은 에린은 “Something came up? Why didn’t she call me at work?”라고 짜증을 내는데, “직장에 전화를 하다”를 call me at work라고 표현한 점을 배울 필요가 있다.
애꿎은 조지에게 화를 낸 에린은 미안해서 “Sorry. I just can’t believe she dumps my kids off when nobody’s home.”이라고 감정을 분출한다. drop my kids off, dump my kids off가 같은 표현임을 알 수 있다. “아무도 집에 없다”를 Nobody’s home.이라고 하면 되고 “내가 집에 있다”는 I’m home.이라고 하면 된다. 사람 관계에서는 화를 먼저 내거나 미안하게 만들면 이길 수 있다. 에린은 조지에게 자기도 모르게 마음이 끌리게 된다.
