Past loudspeakers and up across ornate gates a man clinging to the gate.

확성기를 지나 잘 꾸민 문 저편에 한 남자가 문에 붙어 있다.
BERTIE: (thru speakers) It is to this high purpose... that I now call...
버 티: (확성기를 통해) 오늘의 연설은 바로 그 점을 강조하기 위한 것입니다…
Crowds gathered behind gates.
군중들이 문 뒤에 모여 있다.
BERTIE: (thru speakers) ...my people at home and my peoples across...
INT. CLARENCE HOUSE, QUEEN MARY'S LIVING ROOM - DAY
Queen Mary seated in the armchair.
버 티: (확성기를 통해) …이 땅의 모든 국민 여러분… 멀리 해외에서 듣고 계신 국민 여러분…
내부. 메리 여왕 저택, 거실 낮
메리 여왕이 안락의자에 앉아 있다.
BERTIE: (thru radio) ...the seas, who will make... our cause their own. I ask them...
버 티: (라디오를 통해) …마음을 모아 주십시오.

BERTIE: (into mic) ...to stand calm... and firm and united...
버 티: (마이크에다) …침착하면서도 결연한 자세로 다 함께…
EXT. WOODS - DAY
Soldiers and officers gathered around the rear of an army truck.
외부. 숲 낮
군인들과 장교들이 군 트럭 뒤쪽에 모여 있다.
BERTIE: (thru radio) ...in this time of trial. The task will be hard. There may be dark days ahead... and war...
버 티: (라디오를 통해) …고난을 헤쳐나갑시다. 힘든 시간이 될 것입니다. 어두운 날들이 오래 지속될 수도 있습니다….
STATEROOMS Cosmo Lang, Chamberlain (seated) look down.
의전실 코스모 랭, 챔버린이 앉아서 아래를 바라본다.
BERTIE: (thru radio) ...can no longer be confined...
버 티: (라디오를 통해) …전쟁은 이제 더 이상… 국한된 문제가 아닙니다.
Churchill (seated) stares towards.
처칠이 앉은 채 전면을 응시한다.
BERTIE: (thru radio) ...to the battlefield. But we can only do the right...
버 티: (라디오를 통해) …최전선의 전투에… 우리 모두가 옳고 그름을 인식하고…
BROADCASTING BOOTH.
방송실.
BERTIE: (into mic) ...as we see the right... and reverently commit our cause... to God. If one and all we keep...
버 티: (마이크에다) …옳은 길로 나가야 합니다. 또한 우리의 바램이 이루어질 수 있도록 기도해야 합니다….
Bertie looks down, glances at the microphone.
BERTIE: (into mic) ...resolutely faithful to it... then, with God’s help.... we shall... prevail.
버티는 아래를 보며 마이크를 쳐다본다.
버 티: (마이크에다) …우리 모두가 굳은 결의를 가지고 신념을 잃지 않는다면 신의 은총으로 이 전쟁에서 승리할 것입니다.
Bertie, in his quiet way is totally in command, and utterly magnificent.
STATEROOMS Elizabeth (eyes closed), Lilibet clutching hands Elizabeth sighs deeply. She glances at Lilibet, smiles.
버티는 조용히 아주 거침이 없어 매우 멋지다.
의전실 엘리자베스는 눈을 감고 잇고 릴리벳은 손을 잡고 있다. 엘리자베스가 깊게 한숨을 쉰다. 그녀는 미소지으면서 릴리벳을 바라본다. 고양된 얼굴들.
INT. BBC BROADCASTING HOUSE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
All the technicians break in to spontaneous applause.
BROADCASTING BOOTH Lionel stares at Bertie. Elated faces.
내부. BBC 방송국, 조정실 낮
모든 기사들이 자연적으로 박수를 친다.
방송실 라이널이 버티를 응시한다.
LIONEL: (softly) It was very good, Bertie.
라이널: (조용히) 아주 잘 했어요, 버티.
Bertie exhales. Lionel slides the window closed as Bertie picks up his jacket, puts it on.
버티는 숨을 내쉰다. 라이널은 버티가 재킷을 집어 입을 때 창문을 밀어 닫는다.
LIONEL: You still stammered on the ‘W’.
라이널: 여전히 이중모음에서는 더듬는 거 알죠?
He glances down, grins.
그는 시선을 내리며 희쭉 웃는다.
BERTIE: Well, I had to throw in a few -- so they knew it was me.
버 티: 연설하는 사람이 나라는 걸 알려주려고 일부러 그랬소.
Bertie smiles. Lionel chuckles. The door opens to reveal Wood. Bertie walks through the doorway.
버티는 미소한다. 라이널은 웃는다. 문이 열리고 우드가 나타난다. 버티는 문간으로 걸어간다.
WOOD: Congratulations, Your Majesty.
우 드: 축하드립니다, 폐하.
Bertie and Wood shake hands. Applause.
버티와 우드가 악수를 한다. 갈채.
Key Words

해설
버티는 연설을 훌륭하게 하고 왕의 위엄을 되찾는다. 국내 학습자들이 영화, 뉴스, 드라마 등 방송에서 접하는 네이티브 스피커들과 현실에서의 네이티브 스피커들은 다르다. 그들도 말을 잘하기 위해 고민하고 연습해야 방송에서처럼 말을 잘할 수 있다. 이점을 알면 영어 스피킹에 대한 부담을 줄일 수 있다. 영어 말하기에 자신이 없을 땐 킹스 스피치를 떠올리면서 “영국 왕도 영어를 더듬었던 적이 있었다”는 사실을 떠올리면 자신감을 회복하는데 도움이 될 것이다.
버티는 국민을 향해 “I ask them to stand calm and firm and united in this time of trial.”이라고 호소한다. 연설은 귀에 쏙쏙 들어와야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 쉬운 단어, 평이한 문장 구조를 사용해야 효과적이다. 버티는 ‘요구하다’, ‘묻다’라는 의미를 가진 ask를 선택했고 행동을 요구하는 표현으로 stand calm and firm으로 대구를 이뤘다. 그러면서 ‘단합’을 의미하는 united를 넣었고, 단합해야 하는 이유를 in this time of trial이라고 명확하게 전달했다. 여기서 trial은 ‘시련, 고난, 어려운 상황’ (an experience or a person that causes difficulties for somebody)의 뜻으로 in this time of trial은 in this hour of need와 같다.
그 결과 Bertie, in his quiet way is totally in command.라는 인상을 국민들에게 심어준다. 여기서 command는 ‘명령, 지휘, 지배력, (언어의) 구사능력, 마음대로 쓰기’ 등의 뜻으로 be in command는 ‘마음대로 하다, 지휘하다, (언어의) 구사능력이 뛰어나다, 지배하다’ 등의 뜻이다. totally는 ‘아주, 전적으로’의 뜻이다. 유창한 영어를 구사하는 경우에 He has a good command of English.라고 한다.
