Sam stops in her tracks.
플린트: 아, 아무데도요. 그냥 같이 산책하면 참 좋겠다고 생각했었을 뿐이에요. 친구로서 당신이 그러는 것처럼. (처음 본 척하며) 어머, 저게 뭐죠?
샘이 가던 길을 멈춘다.
SAM: Wow ...
Reveal an enormous yellow, orange Jell-O Mold, refracting the setting sun like a stained- glass window. It’s breathtaking.
SAM: Oh, Jell-O’s my favorite.
FLINT: You never made a request, so I made one for you.
Flint disappears into the Jell-O. Sam looks confused.
SAM: Flint? Flint?
FLINT: (in the Jell-O) Join me.
His arm pokes out of the Jell-O. He pulls her inside.
SAM: Whoa! Whoa!
샘: 와...
스테인드글라스 창문 같이 노을을 반사시키면서 거대한 주황색의 젤로가 나타난다.
숨이 멎을 듯 아름답다.
샘: 오, 내가 제일 좋아하는 건데.
플린트: 당신이 결코 요청한 적이 없지만 그래도 당신을 위
해 하나 만들어 봤어요.
플린트가 젤로 안으로 사라지자, 샘이 당황한다.
샘: 플린트? 플린트?
플린트: (젤로 안에서) 이리와요.
플린트가 팔을 젤로 밖으로 쑥 내밀어 샘을 안으로 당긴다.
샘: 후와!
48. INT. JELL-O MOLD. BALLROOM
Once inside, she tries to gain her balance on the squishy Jell-O floor, then realizes she’s in a beautiful Jell-O cathedral.
48. 내부. 젤로 안. 무도회실
안쪽으로 들어오자마자, 그녀는 흐늘거리는 젤로 바닥에서 몸의 균형을 잡으려고 애쓴 후 비로소 자신이 아름다운 젤로 대성당에 있는 것을 깨닫는다.
SAM: (amazed) Who-oooa. But, how did you ...
FLINT: Oh, I just made it rain Jell-O in the middle of the night, then I gathered it all up with the Outtasightster before everyone woke up and then I brought it here and pressed it into a gigantic custom-carved plastic Tupperware mold I made. No big deal.
샘: (크게 놀라며) 우-와. 하지만 어떻게 당신이...
플린트: 오, 그냥 한밤중에 젤로 비를 만들어서, 사람들이 잠깨기 전에 아웃사이터로 모아서 여기에다가 가져다 놓고, 내가 만든 커다란 맞춤 플라스틱 압축기로 눌러 만들었어요. 별 것 아니에요.
Flint is playing a Jell-O piano.
플린트가 젤로 피아노를 연주한다.
FLINT: Everything’s made of Jell-O. This piano, those sconces, that ghetto blaster, that Jell-O, that aquarium, that Venus de Milo with your face on it next to a Michelangelo’s David that also has your face.
플린트: 전부 젤로로 만들었어요. 피아노, 벽 램프, 카세트 플레이어, 젤로 수족관, 당신 얼굴을 한 밀로의 비너스 상과 역시 당신 얼굴을 한 미켈란젤로의 다비드 상까지.
49. INT. JELL-O MOLD, CUPOLA ATTIC
SAM and Flint watch the sun set through the refracted light of the Jell-O wall. Flint is nervous.
49. 내부. 젤로 안. 둥근 지붕의 다락
샘과 플린트는 젤로 벽에 굴절되어지는 노을을 바라본다. 플린트는 초조하다.
SAM: So, Jell-O.
FLINT: Right, right, right.
SAM: It’s a solid, it’s a liquid, it’s a visco-elastic polymer made of polypeptide chains, but you eat it. (catches herself) I mean, ... it tastes good. (giggles)
FLINT: (confused) Why do you do that?
SAM: Do what?
FLINT: Say something super smart, and then bail from it?
SAM: Can you keep a secret?
FLINT: No. (off look) But this time, sure. Yeah.
SAM: Okay, well, it was a really long time ago, but I too was ...a nerd.
FLINT: Too?
Young Sam in her bedroom stares at a poster of a Doppler.
샘: 그래서, 젤로란 말이죠.
플린트: 맞아요, 맞아, 맞아.
샘: 이건 고체이기도 하고 액체이기도 해. 폴리펩타이드로 만들었으면서 탄성 고분자죠, 심지어 먹을 수도 있어요. (하던 말을 멈추고) 내말은... 맛있다구요. (낄낄 웃는다)
플린트: (혼란스러워하며) 왜 자꾸 그러는 거예요?
샘: 내가 뭘요?
플린트: 굉장히 천재인 것처럼 말했다가 바로 아닌 척 하잖아요?
샘: 비밀 지켜줄 수 있어요?
플린트: 아니요. (곁눈으로) 이번엔 할 수 있어요, 정말이에요. 예.
샘: 좋아요. 그러니까 음, 아주 옛날에 나도... 괴짜였어요.
플린트: 당신도?
어린 샘이 자신의 침실에서 도플러 포스터를 응시한다.
SAM : When I was a little girl, I wore a ponytail, I had glasses, and I was totally obsessed with the science of weather. Other girls wanted a Barbie, I wanted a Doppler Weather Radar 2000 Turbo. But all the kids used to taunt me with this lame song. It wasn’t even clever!
샘: 내가 어렸을 때, 포니테일 머리에 안경을 쓰고 기상과학에 완전히 빠져 있었어요. 다른 여자 애들이 바비 인형을 원할 때, 나는 도플러 기상 레이더 2000 터보를 가지고 싶었거든요. 근데 애들은 막 놀리는 노래를 부르는 거예요. 그다지 재치 있지도 않은 노래를!
Young Sam, finishing an equation, is mocked in class.
수업 중에 방정식을 푼 어린 샘이 조롱을 당한다.
FLASHBACK KIDS: Four eyes! Four eyes! You need glasses to see!
Flint tries not to laugh at ‘glasses to see.’
FLINT: (stifles laugh, then, off her look) Go on.
Sam looks annoyed.
SAM: So I got a new look, gave up the sciency smart stuff, and I was never made fun of again. And I still need these glasses, but I never wear them.
어린 시절 아이들: 네눈박이! 네눈박이! 이 안경잡이야!
플린트는 ‘안경잡이’란 말에 웃지 않으려고 노력한다.
플린트: (웃음을 억지로 참으며 그녀에게서 눈을 뗀다) 계속해요.
샘은 짜증난 것처럼 보인다.
샘: 그래서 외모를 새롭게 바꾸고, 과학 천재 따위를 그만두니까 아무도 놀리지 않더라고요. 아직도 안경이 필요하긴 하지만, 절대 쓰진 않아요.

해설
밀고 당기는 연애 멘트를 배울 수 있다. 먼저 플린트가 넌지시 “I just thought it’d be nice for the two of us to go on a walk together.”라면서 “Like you do as friends.”라고 찔러본다. 사실은 go on a date라고 하고 싶고 as friends가 아니라 as lovers라고 하고 싶은 게 플린트의 마음이다. 단어 하나만 바꿔도 전혀 다른 의미가 된다.
남자는 여자를 위해 수고하고 뭔가를 줌으로써 사랑을 표현한다. 플린트는 그 힘은 이벤트를 준비하고 나서 “No big deal”이라고 쿨 하게 말한다. It’s nothing이라는 의미인데 이렇게 말하는 남자가 있다면 여자는 눈치를 차려야 한다. 반면에, 여자가 사랑을 넌지시 고백하는 방법은 과거의 비밀을 털어놓는 것이다. 이 비밀을 남자가 수용하느냐에 커플 탄생 여부가 달려있다. 샘은 “Can you keep a secret?”라고 양념을 친 후 “Okay, well, it was a really long time ago, but I too was ...a nerd.”라고 털어놓는다. Nerd는 공부든 컴퓨터든 한 가지만 아는 괴짜를 의미하고 사회성이 부족하다는 의미가 내포돼 있다.
