BERTIE: Thank you, Mr Churchill.
CHURCHILL: Sir.

As they stop, Elizabeth steps towards, takes Bertie’s hand.
ELIZABETH: (softly) Darling.
그들이 멈추자 엘리자베스가 나서서 버티의 손을 잡는다.
엘리자베스: (조용히) 여보…
Churchill turns, walks past Lionel.
처칠은 돌아서서 라이널을 지나쳐 걷는다.
BERTIE: How long, Logue?
LIONEL: Just under three minutes.
버티: 얼마나 남았소, 로그?
라이널: 3분 조금 못 남았습니다.
Lionel steps towards as footmen close the doors. They walk towards and a footman pushes open the secret door.
(Bertie’s P.O.V.) Through the doorway to reveal technicians standing by the equipment. A tumble of cables stretch through the rooms. Bertie stops, stares, walks towards. Elizabeth and Lionel follow. The technicians turn, bow their heads as he passes. At the door to the broadcasting booth he is met by the BBC’s Wood.
하인들이 문을 닫자 라이널이 나선다. 그들은 걸어가자 하인이 사람 눈에 띄지 않는 문을 밀어 연다.
(버티의 시점) 문간을 통해 방송기사들이 장비 옆에 서있는 모습이 보인다. 많은 케이블들이 혼란스럽게 방들에 뻗쳐져 있다. 버티는 서서 응시하며 걸어간다. 엘리자베스와 라이널이 뒤를 따른다. 버티가 지나갈 때 기사들이 돌아서며 머리를 숙인다. 방송실로 가는 문 앞에서 그는 BBC의 우드씨의 영접을 받는다.
BERTIE: Mr Wood.
버티: 우드씨.
They shake hands.
그들은 악수를 한다.
WOOD: Good luck, Your Majesty.
우드: 행운을 빕니다, 폐하.
Bertie walks towards.
버티는 앞으로 걸어간다.
ELIZABETH: (softly) Mr Wood.
엘리자베스: (조용히) 우드씨.
INT. BUCKINGHAM PALACE, BROADCASTING BOOTH - DAY
Bertie, Elizabeth, Lionel walk in. As a podium for the speech an old school desk has been propped on wooden blocks. The dreaded BBC microphone.
내부. 버킹엄궁전, 방송실낮
버티, 엘리자베스, 라이널이 걸어 들어온다. 연설을 위한 연단으로 낡은 학교 책상이 나무각재 위에 올려져 있다. 가공할 BBC 마이크가 있다.
BERTIE: You’ve redecorated, Logue.
LIONEL: I made it cosy.
버티: 공간을 꾸민 것 같군, 로그.
라이널: 아늑한 느낌이 들도록 했습니다.
Bertie turns, steps to the desk Lionel turns, slides open the window to get the air circulating.
버티가 돌아서 책상으로 간다. 라이널은 돌아서서 창문을 밀어 연다.
LIONEL: Some fresh air.
라이널: 신선한 공기가 필요하겠죠.
Elizabeth helps Bertie off with his jacket.
엘리자베스는 버티가 재킷을 벗는 것을 돕는다.
ELIZABETH: There you are, darling.
엘리자베스: 이리주세요, 여보.
Bertie stares at the microphone, takes deep breath. He spreads the fingers of one hand, touches the apparatus with the little finger, thumb to chin.
버티는 마이크를 응시하고 심호흡을 한다. 그는 한손 손가락들을 펴서 새끼손가락으로는 장치를, 엄지는 턱을 대본다.
BERTIE: I’m a thistle sifter. I’ve a sieve of sifted thistles and a sieve of unsifted thistles.
버티: 앞집 팥죽은 붉은 팥 풋팥죽이고 뒷집 콩죽은 해콩단콩 콩죽이고 우리집 깨죽은 검은 깨깨죽이다.

Bertie holds his hand between his chin and the microphone. Elizabeth enters from behind him. Her hand on his shoulder.
버티는 턱과 마이크 사이에 손을 든다. 엘리자베스가 그 뒤로 들어온다. 손을 그의 어깨 위에 놓는다.
ELIZABETH: (whispers) Bertie. Darling. Make sure it’s not switched on.
BERTIE: ...a thistle-sifter.
엘리자베스: (속삭인다) 여보, 마이크 전원 꺼져 있는지 확인해보세요.
버티 : …앞집팥죽은.
He breathes heavily.
그는 크게 호흡한다.
LIONEL: Remember the red light will blink four times then I’ve asked them to turn it off. Cos we don’t want that evil eye staring at you all the way through.
라이널: 빨간불이 네 번 깜박이고 나면 꺼달라고 요청했습니다. 연설하시는 동안 악마의 눈처럼 노려보면 안 좋을 것 같아서요.
Bertie nods, looks down. Lionel and Bertie stand at either side of the desk. Elizabeth behind, a strained countenance
버티가 고개를 끄덕이며 내려다본다. 라이널과 버티는 책상 양쪽에 선다. 엘리자베스는 뒤쪽에 있다. 긴장한 표정.
WOOD:(O.S.) One minute, sir.
우드: (목소리) 1분전입니다, 폐하.
Elizabeth steps to Bertie, places her hands on his cheeks.
엘리자베스가 버티에게 다가서며 손을 그의 양볼에 댄다.
ELIZABETH: (softly) I’m sure you’ll be splendid.
엘리자베스: (부드럽게) 멋지게 해낼 거에요.
Key Words
prop: to support an object by leaning it against something, or putting something under it etc.; to support a person in the same way 버팀목을 대다, 받치다, 버티다
ex) We'll formulate measures to prop up the economy. 우린 경제를 지탱해줄 정책을 만들 것이다.
cozy: warm, comfortable and safe, especially because of being small or enclosed 편안한, 기분 좋은, 아늑한
ex) I felt all cozy tucked up in bed. 침대에 누워 있으니 정말 아늑했다.
blink: to shine with an unsteady light; to flash on and off (등불, 별 등이) 명멸하다, 깜박거리다
ex) A light on the display panel will blink. 표시판에 불빛이 깜빡거릴 것이다.
해설
예상대로 버티는 “Thank you, Mr Churchill.”이라면서 큰 힘을 얻는다. Mr는 남성을 나타내는 호칭일 뿐 아니라 상대방을 지칭할 때 사용하는 극존칭이다. 상대방의 직책을 잘 모르는 경우 Mr.를 사용하면 대부분 안전하다.
라이널도 나름 편안한 연설을 할 수 있도록 꾸몄다. 버티가 “You’ve redecorated, Logue.”라고하자, 라이널은 “I made it cosy.”라고 말한다. cosy는 ‘아늑한’이란 의미고 rosy는 ‘장미빛’, ‘전망 등이 희망적인’이란 의미다. ex) The future is looking very rosy for our company.(우리 회사의 미래는 아주 장밋빛으로 보인다.) 화려한 파워포인트 프레젠테이션을 준비했다면 ‘fancy’를 사용할 수 있다.
엘리자베스는 “I’m sure you’ll be splendid.”라고 힘을 불어 넣어준다. 이 대사는 각종 영어 시험을 앞둔 수험생들에게 그대로 사용할 수 있다. 부드러운 어투로 I’m sure you’ll be awesome/great/fantastic/superb 등 긍정적인 형용사를 듬뿍 넣어서 격려하면 기적이 나타날 것이다.
