BERTIE: (sings) For the second time in the lives of most of us we are at...
버티: (노래한다) 국민 여러분 중 많은 분들이 두 번째 전쟁의 시련…
He jams and comes to a halt. The doors open to reveal Elizabeth.
그는 움직이지 않게 되어 멈춘다. 문이 열리고 엘리자베스가 나타난다.
LIONEL: “We are”, take a pause.
BERTIE: Lionel, I can’t do this.
LIONEL: Bertie, you can do it.
라이널: “우리는”에서 쉬어가는 순간이라고 했죠.
버티: 라이널, 못하겠소.
라이널: 버티, 할 수 있어요.
Elizabeth moves to close the doors.
Lionel steps to him they look down at the speech.
엘리자베스가 움직여 문을 닫는다. 라이널이 그에게 다가서 그들은 연설문을 내려다 본다.
LIONEL: Have a look at the last paragraph.
ELIZABETH: Bertie. It’s time.
라이널: 마지막 문단 보세요.
엘리자베스: 버티, 시간됐어요.
They turn, look at Elizabeth. She looks down at her watch.
INT. BUCKINGHAM PALACE, STATEROOM - DAY
The doors open to reveal Bertie. Lionel and Elizabeth behind him. A nanny bends, takes Lilibet’s hand. They walk towards. Through the doorway to reveal Cosmo Lang, Chamberlain, Churchill and officialsare in attendance. A corgi sits. They look towards, bow their heads as Bertie and Elizabeth pass. The corgi barks as they approach.
그들은 돌아서 엘리자베스를 본다. 그녀는 시계를 내려다 본다.
내부. 버킹엄궁전, 의전실낮
문이 열리고 버티가 나타나고, 그 뒤에 라이널 그리고 엘리자베스가 보인다. 보모가 허리를 숙이며 릴리벳의 손을 잡는다. 그들은 걸어 나온다. 문간을 통해 코스모랭, 챔버린, 처칠 그리고 관리들이 시중들고 있다. 코기견이 앉아 있다. 그들은 앞을 보며 버티와 엘리자베스가 지나갈 때 머리를 숙인다. 코기견이 짖는다.
BERTIE: Archbishop.
버티: 대주교.
Bertie offers his hand to Cosmo Lang. They shake hands.
버티는 코스모랭에게 손을 내민다. 그들은 악수한다.
COSMO LANG: Your Majesty.
코스모랭: 국왕폐하.
He looks at Bertie, raises his eyebrows.
그는 버티를 보며 눈썹을 올린다.
COSMO LANG: A great moment, sir.
코스모랭: 중요한 순간입니다, 폐하.
Bertie turns, looks at Chamberlain. The corgi barks.
버티가 몸을 돌려 챔버린을 본다. 코기견이 짖는다.
BERTIE: Prime Minister.
CHAMBERLAIN: Your Majesty.
버티: 수상.
챔버린: 국왕폐하.
Chamberlain and Bertie shake hands.
챔버린과 버티가 악수를 한다.
BERTIE: Nice to see you... again so soon.
버티: 이렇게 빨리다…다시 만나게 되어 기쁘오.
He stammers. Elizabeth looks at Lionel.
그는더듬는다. 엘리자베스가 라이널을 바라본다.
BERTIE: Good of you to be here. I’m sure you have a... a rather busy day.
CHAMBERLAIN: I can only hope we have no more interruptions from those damn sirens, sir.
버티: 이렇게 다들 와주어 고맙소. 다들바쁠텐데.
챔버린: 연설 중에는 제발 싸이렌이 울리지 않기를 바랍니다, 폐하.
Bertie glances around, nods.
BERTIE: Or the wretched dogs. (smiles)
버티는 주위를 둘러보며 고개를 끄덕인다.
버티: 질색인 개들도 안 짖어야 할텐데. (미소를짓는다)
He shakes hands with Churchill.
그는 처칠과 악수를 한다.
BERTIE: Congra... congratulations. First Lord of the Admiralty.
CHURCHILL: Your Majesty.
버티: 해…해군 장관이 된 걸 축하하오.
처칠: 감사합니다.
Bertie looks towards.
버티는앞을본다.
BERTIE: The long... walk.
버티: 긴 길이 되겠군요.
He walks towards, Churchill walks with him. Lionel follows.
그는 걸어가고 처칠이 같이 걷는다. 라이널이 뒤를 따른다.
CHURCHILL: Good luck, sir. I, too, dread this apparatus.
처칠: 행운을 빕니다, 폐하. 저도 이런 기계를 두려워합니다.
They continue through the doorway towards.
그들은 문간을 통해 나아간다.
CHURCHILL: Had a speech impediment myself, you know.
처칠: 발음 장애가 있었지요.
Lionel, Elizabeth and others follow them.
라이널, 엘리자베스 그리고 다른 사람들이 그들을 뒤따른다.
BERTIE: I didn’t.
CHURCHILL: Family secret. Tongue-tied. An operation was considered to be too dangerous. (drawls) I eventually made an asset of it.
버티: 몰랐소.
처칠: 제 혀가 짧죠. 가족들만 압니다. 당시 수술은 위험해서 할 수가 없었죠. (느리게 말한다) 그래도 결국은 연설을 잘할 수 있게 되었습니다.
Key Words

해설
버티에게 처칠이 큰 힘이 되어 준다. 명연설가로 알려진 처칠은 “Good luck, sir. I, too, dread this apparatus”라면서 “Had a speech impediment myself, you know.”라고 말한다. 사람들은 성공을 원하지만 판에 박힌 성공 스토리보다는 실패를 극복한 이야기를 좋아한다. 처칠은 버티의 심정을 읽고 I, too라는 단어를 사용해서 공감대를 형성한다. 스피킹을 가르치는 교사라면 “I, too was afraid of speaking English.”라고 하면 많은 학생들의 마음을 열 수 있을 것이다.
처칠은 “Family secret. Tongue-tied. I eventually made an asset of it.”이라고 말했다. 여기서 secret이란 단어를 사용해서 즉시 버티와 비밀을 공유하는 관계로 자신을 설정하고, 결과는 두려워하던 연설이 asset 즉 자산이 되었다고 강조한다. 단순히 success가 아닌 ‘장기’가 되었다고 말함으로써 “If I made it, you can do it, too”라는 의미를 훌륭하게 전달하고 있다. 버티의 현 상황에 가장 적절한 멘트를 하는 능력을 보면 처칠이 왜 명연설가임을 알 수 있다.
