DAVID: (mumbles) Right.
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) …법적으로 그것을 말할 수 있는 입장이 아니었습니다.
데이빗: (중얼거린다) 맞아.
He places the pen on to the abdication document stands moves to lift a cigarette from the ashtray.
Bertie walks towards.
그는 퇴위 서류에다 펜을 놓고 일어서 움직여서는 재떨이에서 담배를 집어 든다.
버티가 다가온다.
DAVID: (V.O. into mic) A few hours ago, I discharged my last duty…
Bertie steps to the table.
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) 몇 시간 전을 기해 저는 의무를 모두 내려놓았습니다.
버티가 테이블로 간다.
DAVID: (V.O. into mic) ...as King and Emperor...
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) …왕과 황제로서의…
Bertie sits, signs the abdication document as David turns, walks.
데이빗이 돌아서 걸어가자 버티가 앉아서 퇴위 서류에 서명을 한다.
DAVID: (V.O. into mic) ...and now…
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) 이제…
Across the table Bertie places the pen on to the abdication document.
테이블 건너서 버티가 퇴위 서류에 펜을 놓는다.
DAVID: (V.O. into mic) ...that I have been succeeded by my brother, the Duke of York...
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) … 저의 동생인 요크 공작이 왕위를 이어가게 되었습니다.
Bertie stands, moves back. David takes a cigarette from the ashtray.
버티가 일어서서 물러난다. 데이빗은 재떨이에서 담배를 집는다.
DAVID: (V.O. into mic)... first words must be to declare my allegiance to him.
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) 그 무엇보다도 먼저 저는 새 국왕에게 제 충성을 바칩니다.
He turns, draws on the cigarette. Bertie looks at David, steps towards, glances around.
그는 몸을 돌리며 담배를 빤다. 버티는 데이빗을 보고 걸어 나서며 주위를 바라본다.
DAVID: (V.O. into mic) ...this I do with all my heart.
데이빗: (목소리, 마이크로) …진심을 다해 그렇게 할 것입니다.
INT. WINDSOR CASTLE, STUDY - EVENING
Across a desk David seated in front of a microphone, clutching his speech.
내부. 윈저 성 서재 저녁
책상 건너편에 데이빗이 연설문을 쥐고서 마이크 앞에 앉아 있다.
DAVID: (into mic) You all know the reasons which have impelled me to renounce the throne... but you must believe me when I tell you... that I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility... and to discharge my duties as King, as I would wish to do... without the help and support of the woman I love.
INT. WINDSOR CASTLE, DRAWING ROOM - EVENING
Bertie and Elizabeth seated on the sofa radio by them.
데이빗: (마이크로) 여러분은 제가 왕위를 포기할 수밖에 없는 이유를 이미 알고 계실 겁니다… 그러나 부디 저의 이야기를 믿어주시기 바랍니다… 저는 사랑하는 여인의 도움과 지지가 없이는 국왕으로서의 무거운 책임을 이행해 나가는 것이 불가능하다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
내부. 윈저 성, 응접실 저녁
버티와 엘리자베스가 소파에 앉아 있다. 그들 옆에는 라디오가 있다.
DAVID: (thru radio) And I want you to know, this decision ... has been made less difficult to me... by the sure knowledge that my brother... with his long training in the public affairs of this country...
데이빗: (라디오를 통해) 또한 이 자리를 빌어 말씀드리고 싶습니다… 제가 이런 결정을 함에 있어 조금이라도 마음의 짐을 덜 수 있었던 것은… 저의 동생이 왕실의 책무를 다할 수 있도록 충분히 준비가 된 인물이라는 사실 때문이었습니다…
Bertie battles his emotions. Elizabeth takes Bertie’s hand supportively.
버티는 감정과 싸운다. 엘리자베스는 격려하며 버티의 손을 잡는다.
INT. YORK HOUSE, HALLWAY - DAY
Bertie is in full regalia of an Admiral of the Fleet’s uniform walks towards followed by an equerry in uniform.

DAVID: (V.O. thru radio) ...and with his fine qualities...
데이빗: (목소리, 라디오를 통해) …그는 훌륭한 인품을 바탕으로…
EXT. STREET - DAY
Bertie walks through the doorway to reveal journalists and photographers gathered. Flashbulb flares.
외부. 거리 낮
버티가 문간으로 걸어가자 신문기자들과 사진사들이 모여 있다. 플래쉬가 터진다.
DAVID: (V.O. thru radio) ...will be able to take my place forthwith...
데이빗: (목소리, 라디오를 통해) …저를 대신하여…
Bertie steps past reporters and photographers.
버티가 기자들과 사진사들을 지나간다.
DAVID: (V.O. thru radio) ...without interruption or injury...
데이빗: (목소리, 라디오를 통해) …한 치의 장애나 어려움 없이…
Grimly, Bertie climbs into the rear of Rolls Royce.

DAVID: (V.O. thru radio) ...to the life and progress of the Empire.

abdication: 퇴위, 사직, (권력의) 포기 ex) King Francis announced of his abdication due to ill health. 프랜시스 왕은 건강악화로 인해 왕위를 포기한다고 발표했습니다.
withhold: to refuse to give something to somebody 손대지 못하게 하다, 말리다, 알리지 않다

해석
버티가 그토록 우려하던 일이 터진다. 데이빗의 퇴위 라디오 연설을 듣게 된 것이다. 데이빗은 “저는 여러분께 제 뜻을 말씀드릴 수 있게 되었습니다.”를 “I am able to say a few words of my own.”라고 표현했다. be able은 ‘~할 수 있는 능력’을 나타내는 표현으로 can과 비슷한 의미다. “미래에 나는 글로벌 리더가 될 수 있을 것이다”라고 말할 경우 조동사 will과 can이 겹쳐서 “I will can become a global leader in the furue”라고 말할 수 없지만 “I will be able to become a global leaders.”라고 표현할 수 있다.
데이빗은 사석과는 달리 버티를 ‘준비된 왕’으로 소개한다. 그는 “this decision has been made less difficult to me by the sure knowledge that my brother with his long training in the public affairs of this country...”라고 말한다. 여기서 training은 실전에 투입할 수 있는 ‘훈련’을 의미한다. Education의 경우 좀 더 이론적인 의미를 지니고 있다. 미국의 저명한 언어학과 교수는training과 education의 차이를 설명하면서 학교에서 sex education을 실시하는 것은 자연스럽지만 sex training을 제공하면 큰일 날 것이다라고 한 적이 있다. 기본적인 단어를 정확하게 알고 능숙하게 구사하는 게 영어 달인으로 가는 지름길이다.
