| | LIONEL: I’m just having trouble with a patient.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) Should he be able to choose his own personal friends, his private interests and his own wife?
MYRTLE: That isn’t like you.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) Or must he, night and day, in all things, in all ways, be the servant of his crown?
MYRTLE: Why?
LIONEL: He’s scared. He’s afraid of his own shadow.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) Outside Buckingham Palace, crowds wait for news as all royal engagements are cancelled.
MYRTLE: Isn’t that why they come to you?
LIONEL: This fellow could really be somebody great. He’s fighting me.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) At Marlborough House too, they watch members of the Royal Family come and go.
MYRTLE: Perhaps he doesn’t want to be great.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) They see Queen Mary drive out in the royal saloon. After conferring with the Prime Minister, His Majesty goes to his country home at Fort Belvedere...
MYRTLE: Perhaps that’s what you want.
Lionel looks away.
라이널: 환자랑 갈등이 좀 있소.
라디오 아나운서: (라디오를 통해) …그가 자신의 개인적 친구들, 사적 이익 그리고 그 자신의 아내를 선택할 수 있을까?
머 틀: 당신답지 않게…
라디오 아나운서: (라디오를 통해) 아니면 밤낮으로, 모든 일에서, 모든 방법으로 자신의 왕관의 종이 되어야만 하는가?
머 틀: 어쩌다가 그렇게 됐어요?
라이널: 환자가 겁을 먹었소. 내면의 그림자를 보려고 하지 않는 거지.
라디오 아나운서: (라디오를 통해) 버킹엄 궁 밖에는 군중들이 모든 왕실의 업무가 취소되면서 뉴스를 기다리고 있습니다.
머 틀: 그걸 고치고 싶어서 당신한테 온 거 아니에요?
라이널: 대단한 사람이 될 수도 있을 텐데… 나랑 싸우려고만 하는구려.
라디오 아나운서 : (라디오를 통해) 말보로 가에도 역시 왕족들이 드나드는 것을 지켜보고 있습니다.
머 틀: 어쩌면 대단한 사람이 되고 싶지 않은 지도 모르죠.
라디오 아나운서: (라디오를 통해) 메리 여왕께서 왕족의 차를 타고 나가는 것이 보입니다. 수상과 의논을 한 후 폐하께서는 포트 벨베더에 있는 시골 집에 가시며…
머 틀: 어쩌면 당신이 그에게 그걸 바라는 걸 수도 있죠.
라이널은 시선을 돌린다.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) ...and as Mr Baldwin goes to the House of Commons, there is tension in Downing Street.
LIONEL: I might have overstepped the mark.
RADIO ANNOUNCER: (thru radio) What action His Majesty will take still seems to be in a royal secret.
MYRTLE: Apologize. Do you both good.
라디오 아나운서: (라디오를 통해) …볼드윈 수상은 하원으로 가시면서 다우닝 가에는 긴장이 떠 돕니다.
라이널: 내가 선을 넘었을 수도 있겠군.
라디오 아나운서: (라디오를 통해) 폐하께서 어떤 조치를 취할지는 여전히 왕실의 비밀인 것 같습니다.
머 틀: 사과하세요. 둘 다 좋은 사람들이니까.
INT. YORK HOUSE, HALLWAY - DAY
Lionel seated by the fireplace glances around.
The door opens He stands as a steward and an equerry enter through. The equerry walks to Lionel. He is scrupulously polite.
내부. 요크 가, 복도 낮
라이널은 벽난로 옆에 앉아서 주위를 쳐다본다.
문이 열린다. 그는 집사와 시종 무관이 들어올 때 일어선다. 시종무관은 라이널에게 걸어온다. 그는 용의주도하게 예의 바르다.
EQUERRY: I’m very sorry, Mr Logue, the Duke is busy.
LIONEL: I’m happy to wait. Or I could come back later.
EQUERRY: As I said, the Duke is terribly busy.
시종무관: 죄송합니다만, 로그씨. 공작 전하께서 매우 바쁘십니다.
라이널: 기다릴 수 있습니다. 다음에 다시 찾아 뵈도 되고요.
시종무관: 이미 말씀 드렸듯이 공작전하께서 매우 바쁘십니다.
Lionel is being dismissed. He watches as the steward opens the door. Driving rain in street.
라이널은 쫓겨나고 있다. 그는 집사가 문을 열자 지켜본다. 거리에는 비가 휘몰아친다.
LIONEL: Thank you.
라이널: 감사합니다.
He puts on his hat, lifts an umbrella from the rear of a chair.
그는 모자를 쓰고, 의자 뒤에서 우산을 든다.
LIONEL: Thank you.
라이널: 감사합니다.
He steps through the doorway, opens the umbrella, walks down the steps.
그는 문을 나서며 우산을 펴고 층계 아래로 걸음을 옮긴다.
INT. YORK HOUSE, BERTIE'S STUDY - EVENING
Bertie and Churchill seated either side of the cluttered desk.
내부. 요크 가, 버티의 서재 저녁
버티와 처칠이 어수선한 책상 양쪽에 앉아 있다.
CHURCHILL: Parliament will not support the marriage. But there are other reasons for concern. He was careless with state papers. He lacked commitment and resolve... and there are those who are worried about where he will stand when war comes with Germany.
처 칠: 의회는 이 결혼을 지지하지 않을 겁니다. 문제는 그것만이 아닙니다, 전하. 국왕께서는 공적인 업무에 무관심하고 각종 책무들도 소홀히 하고 있어요. 독일과 전쟁을 하게 되면 어떻게 대처하실지도 걱정이 됩니다.
Bertie reacts, stammers.
버티는 반응을 보이며 말을 더듬는다.
BERTIE: We’re not coming to that?
CHURCHILL: Indeed we are, sir. Prime Minister Baldwin may deny this, but Hitler’s intent is crystal clear. War with Germany will come. And we will need a King whom we can all stand behind united.
버 티: 그래도 전… 전쟁이 일어나진 않겠죠?
처 칠: 일어날 겁니다, 전하. 볼드윈 수상은 아니라고 하지만 히틀러의 계획은 불을 보듯 뻔합니다. 곧 독일과 전쟁을 할 것이고 그 때가 되면 우리 모두를 단결시킬 왕이 필요합니다.

해설
라이넬은 머틀과 대화를 나눈다. 항상 자기 편이 돼 주는 사람은 세상에 부인 밖에 없기 때문에 “I’m just having trouble with a patient.”라고 털어놓는다. 머틀은 “당신 답지 않게”를 “That isn’t like you.”라고 말하는데, 쉽지만 유용한 표현이다.
라이넬은 “He’s scared. He’s afraid of his own shadow.”라고 말한다. Afraid, sacred, nervous 등은 부정적인 감정 상태다. 긍정적인 감정 상태를 표현하려면 excited, delighted, passionate 등을 활용하면 된다. ex) He’s excited to learn English.(그는 영어를 배우는데 신이 났다.)
머틀은 핵심을 짚어준다. “Isn’t that why they come to you?”라고 하자 라이넬은 “This fellow could really be somebody great. He’s fighting me.”라고 설명한다. 요즘 왕따, 학교 폭력 사태가 이슈가 되고 있는데, ‘왕따’는 loser라고 하고 존재감이 없고 별볼일 없는 사람을 nobody라고 한다. 유명인사는 celebrity, 권위가 있는 전문가는 authority라고 오프라 윈프리 처럼 자기 분야에서 유명하면서 권위가 있는 경우 celebrity authority라고 한다.
