INT. BALMORAL BALLROOM - DAY A weekend house party. Five or six friends dance to a gramophone. At the epicenter, David, a very picture of insouciance, and Wallis clutching drink and cigarette, dripping in jewelry. WALLIS: (O.S.) Oh, how lovely to see you both. Phew. 월리스: (목소리) 어머나 이렇게 두 분을 뵙게 돼서 너무 반갑네요.
Wallis amongst guests walks towards. WALLIS: Welcome to our little country shack. 손님 가운데 있던 월리스가 걸어온다. 월리스: 누추한 시골 오두막에 오신 걸 환영합니다.
Elizabeth and Bertie look at Wallis. Elizabeth walks around Wallis towards. 엘리자베스와 버티는 월리스를 바라본다. 엘리자베스는 월리스 주위를 돌아 간다.
ELIZABETH: I came at the invitation of the King. 엘리자베스: 저는 국왕 폐하 초대 받고 와서…
Wallis is wrongfooted. Elizabeth steps to David. She curtsies as they turn to each other. 월리스는 불의의 습격을 당한 상태다. 엘리자베스는 데이빗에게 다가간다. 그녀는 그들이 서로에게 돌아설 때 예의를 갖춰 인사를 한다.
ELIZABETH: Your Majesty. 엘리자베스: 폐하.
He leans to her and kisses her cheek. 그는 그녀에게 숙여 볼에 키스를 한다.
DAVID: You all right? ELIZABETH: Sorry we’re late. 데이빗: 기분이 안 좋아요? 엘리자베스: 늦어서 죄송합니다.
She turns, looks back at Bertie. 그녀는 돌아서 버티를 본다.
BERTIE: Very nice to see you... 버 티: 만나서 반갑습니다…
He offers his hand. She shakes it. 그는 손을 내민다. 그녀는 악수를 한다.
David draws on his cigarette as Bertie steps to him. 데이빗은 버티가 다가오자 담배를 빤다.
BERTIE: Making some... changes to the garden, I see. DAVID: Yes, I’m not, not quite finished yet. 버 티: 정원 경관을… 바꾸고 있나 봐. 데이빗: 응, 아직 끝난 건 아니고.
INT. BALMORAL, PORTRAIT GALLERY, DRAWING ROOM - DAY Churchill clutching drink and Elizabeth stand by the window. He steps to her and drinks. ELIZABETH: Don’t tell me I behaved badly, Mr Churchill. CHURCHILL: On the contrary, Your Royal Highness. Etiquette decrees that royalty should be greeted by the official host... in this case, the King. Not a commoner. ELIZABETH: Thank you. 내부. 발모랄, 초상화 화랑, 응접실 낮 술잔을 쥔 처칠과 엘리자베스가 창가에 서 있다. 그는 그녀에게 다가가 술을 마신다. 엘리자베스: 제 처신에 대해서는 잔소리 말아주세요, 처칠씨. 처 칠: 오히려 그 반대이지요, 전하. 왕족의 예법이라면 파티 주최자인 폐하께서 지켜주셔야겠죠. 우리가 아니라… 엘리자베스: 고맙습니다.
Churchill looks through the window and then looks at Elizabeth. 처칠은 창문을 통해 바라보고는 엘리자베스를 본다.
CHURCHILL: What is her hold on him? ELIZABETH: I’ve no idea. 처 칠: 어떤 여성인가요? 엘리자베스: 저도 몰라요.
She sits as she glances up at Churchill. 그녀는 처칠을 보면서 앉는다.
ELIZABETH: Apparently she has certain skills... acquired in an establishment in Shanghai. 엘리자베스: 분명 대단한 재능이 있긴 하겠죠… 상하이에 여행 갔었다던데 거기서 뭔가 배웠나보죠.
INT. BALMORAL, BALLROOM - DAY Wallis drinks, looks towards. 내부. 발모랄, 무도실 낮 월리스는 술을 마시고 앞쪽을 본다.
WALLIS: David. 월리스: 데이빗.
David draws on the cigarette as he turns. He looks at Wallis by the fireplace. She raises her glass, taps it with the cigarette holder. 데이빗은 돌아서면서 담배를 피운다. 그는 벽난로 옆에 서 있는 월리스를 본다. 그녀는 잔을 들고 궐련 파이프로 잔을 두드린다.
DAVID: Just be a sec, darling. (to Bertie) Would you excuse me? 데이빗: 금방 가져올게. (버티에게) 잠깐 실례.
David gestures with glass, turns to him. Wallis drinks as David walks past Bertie towards. She looks at Bertie. Bertie walks away as she drinks. She glances at the footman and ‘dismisses’ him. 데이빗은 잔으로 몸짓을 하고는 그에게 돌아선다. 월리스는 데이빗이 버티 옆을 지나쳐 갈 때 술을 마신다. 그녀는 버티를 바라본다. 버티는 그녀가 술을 마실 때 사라진다. 그녀는 하인을 보고는 그를 물러나게 한다.
INT. BALMORAL, SERVANTS' CORRIDOR/WINE CELLAR - DAY David crouching by the wine rack searches through it. Bertie catches him and steps toward. BERTIE: David, I’ve been trying to see you. DAVID: (stands) I’ve been terribly busy. 내부. 발모랄, 하인들의 통로/술 저장고 낮 술 저장 선반 옆에 웅크리고 있는 데이빗이 선반에서 술을 찾는다. 버티가 그를 보고 다가온다. 버 티: 형 만나기가 왜 이렇게 어려워. 데이빗: (일어선다) 그간 엄청나게 바빴다.
He walks towards followed by Bertie. 그는 앞으로 걸고 버티가 뒤따른다.
BERTIE: Doing what? 버 티: 뭐하느라?
They walk around the corner towards. 그들은 모퉁이를 돌아 걸어 나온다.
DAVID: Kinging. BERTIE: Really? 데이빗: 왕 노릇하느라. 버 티: 왕 노릇?
David turns to the wine rack and slides a bottle from it. 데이빗은 술 저장 선반으로 돌아서서 거기에서 술병 하나를 살살 움직인다.
BERTIE: Kinging -- is a, a precarious business these days. 버 티: 그게… 요즘에 어… 얼마나 위태로운 직업인지 알고는 있는 거야?
He watches as David searches the rack. 그는 데이빗이 선반을 뒤질 때 바라본다.
BERTIE: Where’s the Russian Tsar? Where’s -- cousin Wilhelm? 버 티: 러시아 황제는 어디 있지? 독일의 빌헬름은 만나봤어?

해설: 영국의 파티 문화가 펼쳐진다. 파티에서 첫 인사는 항상 중요하다. 윌리스는 “Oh, how lovely to see you both. Phew.”라고 말하고 환영 인사로 “Welcome to our little country shack.”이라고 말한다.
엘리자베스는 “I came at the invitation of the King.”라고 소개한다. 파티에 참석하는 사람들이 가장 좋아하는 단어가 바로 invitation(초대)이다. 특별한 대우를 받고 있다는 느낌을 주기 때문이다.
왕이 된 데이빗에게 안부 인사를 하면서 “Making some... changes to the garden, I see.”이라고 가벼운 화제를 던지자 데이빗은 “I’m not quite finished yet.”이라고 답한다. 여기서 not quite는 부분부정을 나타내어 ‘완전히 ~은 아니다, 전부 ~은 아니다’의 의미다. finished는 형용사로 ‘(일, 제품 등을) 끝마친, 완료한, 완성된, (사람과의 관계가) 끝난, 절교한’의 뜻이다. Finished 대신 done를 사용해도 된다.
파티에서 잠시 자리를 비울 경우 데이빗 처럼 “Just be a sec. Would you excuse me?”라고 하면 된다.
버티는 “David, I’ve been trying to see you.”라고 말하고 데비잇은 “I’ve been terribly busy.:라고 이유를 설명한다. 국내 학습자들이 영작할 때 현재완료 시제를 효과적으로 사용하지 못하는 경우가 많다. 현재완료는 과거의 행동이 현재까지 계속될 경우 사용할 수 있다. 버티가 과거에 데이빗을 만나려고 했고 지금 만나고 있기 때문에 단순 과거 I tried to~대신에 I’ve been trying to~를 사용한 것이다.
