He places the glass on to the table.

Bertie sits and Lionel pulls a chair close.
버티는 앉고 라이널은 가까이에 있는 의자를 당긴다.
BERTIE: Father wouldn’t allow it. He...
버 티: 아버지가 허락하지 않았소. 아버지는…
Lionel sits.
라이널이 앉는다.
BERTIE: ...he ...collected stamps, so we had to collect stamps.
버 티: …아버지께서 우… 우표를 수집하셨기 때문에 우리도 우표를 수집했지.
Bertie lifts the plane.
버티는 비행기를 집어 든다.
LIONEL: You can finish that off if you sing.
Bertie looks at Lionel.
라이널: 그거 만들게 해드릴 테니 노래 불러보세요.
버티는 라이널을 바라본다.
LIONEL: (sings) My brother David, dum, dum, dum-dum...
BERTIE: I’m not going to sit here warbling.
LIONEL: You can with me.
BERTIE: Because you’re peculiar.
LIONEL: I take that as a compliment. Well, er...
라이널: (노래한다) 우리 형 데이빗은… 어쩌구, 저쩌구…
버 티: 이런 데 앉아서 목소리를 떨며 노래하지 않겠소.
라이널: 제가 있잖아요.
버 티: 당신은 별난 사람이잖소.
라이널: 칭찬으로 받아들이겠소. 그런데…
He takes the model aeroplane from him, places it on to the table.
그는 그로부터 모형 비행기를 받아 테이블 위에 놓는다.
LIONEL: ...rules are rules.
라이널: …원칙은 지켜야죠.
Lionel sits back as they look at each other.
라이널은 그들이 서로를 바라볼 때 뒤로 젖혀 앉는다.
BERTIE: I’m not... crooning ‘Swanee River’.
LIONEL: ‘Camptown Races’ then. (sings) My brother David said to me, doo-dah, doo-dah. (normal) Continuous sound will give you flow.
BERTIE: No.
버 티: ‘스와니’처럼 감… 감상적인 노래는 안 부를 거요.
라이널: 그럼 ‘시골 경마’로 해요. (노래한다) 우리 형 데이빗이 말했소, 어쩌구, 저쩌구. (정상 목소리로) 자연스럽게 리듬을 타요.
버 티 : 싫소.
He toys with the model aeroplane, sits back. He sighs.
그는 모형비행기를 만지작 거리며 뒤로 젖혀 앉는다. 그는 한숨을 쉰다.
LIONEL: Does it feel strange now that David’s on the throne?
BERTIE: To tell the truth, it was a relief. Knowing I... wouldn’t be... King.
LIONEL: But unless he produces an heir, you’re next in line.
라이널: 이상하지 않아요? 이제 데이빗이 왕이라는 게?
버 티: 솔직하게 말하면… 편안해졌소. 내가 와… 왕이 안 된다는 게 확정되었기 때문에…
라이널: 그래도 형이 후손이 없으면 왕이 되는 거잖아요.
Bertie stares at him.
LIONEL: And your daughter Elizabeth would then succeed you.
BERTIE: (sings) You’re barking up the wrong tree now Doctor, doctor...
LIONEL: (sings) Lionel. (normal) See? You didn’t stammer.
BERTIE: Of course I didn’t stammer, I was singing.
버티는 그를 응시한다.
라이널: 그렇게 되면 따님인 엘리자베스양도 여왕이 될테고…
버 티: (노래한다) 엄한 다리 긁는군. 박사, 박사…
라이널: (노래한다) 라이널이라 부르라니까. (정상적인 목소리로) 거봐요, 더듬지 않죠?
버 티: 당연히 더듬지 않죠, 노래 부르고 있었으니까.
He looks down.
그는 고개를 숙인다.
LIONEL: Well, as a little reward, you get to put some glue on these struts.
라이널: 좋아요, 노래 불렀으니까 이 기둥들을 풀로 붙여도 됩니다.
Lionel points to the model aeroplane. Bertie leans towards, places his glass on to the table.
라이널은 모형 비행기를 가리킨다. 버티는 몸을 내밀어 테이블 위에다 술잔을 놓는다.
BERTIE: Your boy -- won’t mind?
LIONEL: No, not at all.
버 티: 아이들이… 화내지 않겠소?
라이널: 전혀요.
Bertie picks up a glue brush.
버티는 아교 붓을 든다.
BERTIE: David and I were -- very close. Young bucks, you know.
버 티: 데이빗 형이란 난… 많이 친했었소. 형 아우하면서 몰려다녔었지.
Bertie glues the model aeroplane.
버티는 모형 비행기에다 풀칠을 한다.
LIONEL: Did you chase the same girls?
라이널: 여자 취향이 비슷했나봐요?
Bertie places the model aeroplane on to the table. He mumbles.
버티는 모형 비행기를 테이블 위에다 놓고 중얼거린다.
Key Words
warble: to sing, especially in a high voice that is not very steady 지저귀다, 목소리를 떨며 노래하다

해설:
영어로 속마음을 고백하는 스토리텔링은 어렵지 않다. 버티는 “You know...I always wanted to build models.”라고 시작한다. 바램을 나타내는 표현은 역시 want to, would like to, be interested in 등을 많이 사용한다.
문제는 “Father wouldn’t allow it.”였다. 아버지가 제왕적인 사고를 가지고 있으면 자식에게 어떤 면이라도 내적 상처를 남기게 마련이다. 버티는 그때의 기억이 되살리자 더듬으면서 “...he ...collected stamps, so we had to collect stamps.”라고 말한다. 문장과 문장을 연결할 때는 and, but, or, so 등 등위접속사만 잘 활용해도 훌륭한 스토리텔링을 할 수 있다.
버티가 라이널에게 “you’re peculiar.”라고 말하자, 라이널은 “칭찬으로 받아들이겠소.”를 I take that as a compliment.라고 표현한다. 외워서 사용하면 좋은 표현이다.
