DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: (V.O.) Inhale deep into your lungs, Your Royal Highness.
INT. 145 PICCADILLY YORK HOUSE, DRAWING ROOM - DAY
Bertie draws deeply on his cigarette.
블란딘-벤담 의사: (목소리) 깊이 들이 마십시오, 전하.

버티가 담배를 깊이 빨아들인다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: (O.S.) Relaxes your larynx, does it not?
블란딘-벤담 의사: (목소리) 후두가 편안해지실 겁니다. 그렇지요?
Bertie is seated nervously on the edge of a couch. Doctor Blandine-Bentham, an elderly, unctuous, studiedly-distinguished physician, leans against the table.
버티는 소파의 가장자리에 초조하게 앉아 있다. 나이 지긋하고 살살 녹이며, 박학하기로 유명한 의사인 블란딘-벤담 의사가 테이블에 기대어 서 있다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: Cigarette smoking calms the nerves and, er, gives you confidence.
블란딘-벤담 의사: 흡연은 신경을 안정시키고 또… 자신감을 키워줍니다.
Smiling ingratiatingly, the doctor steps to the table. Elizabeth looks towards from across the room a corgi by her.
싹싹하게 웃으면서 의사는 테이블로 다가간다. 엘리자베스가 쳐다본다. 그녀 옆에는 코기견이 있다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: Now if Your Royal Highness would be so kind as to open your hand, hmm...
블란딘-벤담 의사: 전하, 이제 손바닥을 펴보시지요.
He lifts some marbles from antiseptic solution. He places the marbles on to the tray, carries the marbles to Bertie. He lifts a marble from the tray with tongs.
그는 살균 용액에서 구슬 몇 개를 집어 들고 쟁반에다 놓고는 구슬을 버티에게 가져온다. 그는 집게로 쟁반에서 구슬 하나를 집어 든다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM : Sterilised.
블란딘-벤담 의사: 방금 살균했습니다.
Bertie looks down.

DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: (O.S.) One...

He places a marble on Bertie’s open hand one by one.
그는 버티의 열린 손에 구슬을 하나씩 올려놓는다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: ...Two... Three…

Elizabeth looks towards.
엘리자베스가 바라본다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: ...Four... Five…

Elizabeth watches as the marbles are placed into Bertie’s hand.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: ...six… seven. Now if I may take the liberty, insert them into your mouth. Hmm?
엘리자베스는 구슬들이 버티의 손에 놓여질 때 지켜본다.
블란딘-벤담 의사: …여섯… 일곱. 자 이제 입안에 넣으십시오. 흠?
Bertie looks towards. Elizabeth watches with growing discomfort.
버티는 앞을 본다. 엘리자베스는 점차 불안해지면서 바라본다.
ELIZABETH: Excuse me, Doctor. What is the purpose of this?
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM : Er, it’s the classic approach. It, it cured Demosthenes.
엘리자베스: 의사선생님, 죄송합니다만 어떤 효과가 있나요?
블란딘-벤담 의사: 데모스테네스를 치료한 전통적인 방법입니다.
Mortified, Bertie lifts a marble from his hand, pops it into his mouth.
버티는 손에서 구슬 하나를 집어 입에다 넣는다.
ELIZABETH: That was in Ancient Greece. Er, has it worked since?
엘리자베스: 그건 고대 그리스 때였고… 이후에도 어떤 효과를 본 경험이 있나요?
Doctor Blandine-Bentham chuckles. Bertie forces the marbles into his mouth.

블란딘-벤담 의사: (부드럽게) “수많은 말들”을. 네?
Bertie blanches, gags.
버티는 창백해지며, 구역질이 난다.
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM: Fight against those marbles, Your Royal Highness.
블란딘-벤담 의사: 구슬에 대고 힘을 더 주십시오, 전하.
Bertie tries to speak. It is excruciating.
버티는 말하려고 애를 쓴다. 그것이 몹시 괴롭힌다.
BERTIE: (mouth full) A wealth of...
DR BLANDINE-BENTHAM : Enunciate!
Bertie glances at Elizabeth. He mumbles.

말더듬이 버티 전하의 언어치료가 시작된다. 의사는 전통적인 방법인 호흡부터 시작한다. “Inhale deep into your lungs, Your Royal Highness.”에서 inhale은 공기나 가스 등을 ‘들이쉬다, 흡입하다, 숨을 들이쉬다, 담배연기를 깊이 들이마시다’의 뜻이고 exhale은 ‘숨을 내쉬다, 방출하다’는 의미다. 심호흡을 시킨 후에는 “Relaxes your larynx, does it not?”를 풀어주고 “Cigarette smoking calms the nerves and, er, gives you confidence.”라고 말한다. 나름대로 근거가 있는 방법이다. 왜냐하면 호흡은 언어 발성에 중요한 역할을 하고 긴장을 푸는데도 효과가 있다. 미국의 명문 학교입학 사정관들이 면접에서 선호하는 학생이 바로 “relaxed and confident”한 학생이다. 또한 세계적인 언어학자 스티븐 크라셴도 “low anxiety, high self-esteem”한 상태에서 언어습득이 잘 된다고 했다. 그런데 다음이 문제다. 의사는 “Now if I may take the liberty, insert them into your mouth. Hmm?”라고 말하고 엘리자베스 여왕은 즉시 “What is the purpose of this?”라고 질문한다. 이 구문은 다양한 상황에서 핵심을 파악할 때 사용할 수 있다. 외국에서 유명인사가 방한하면 기자들이 항상 묻는 질문 중에 “What’s the purpose of your visit?”이 있다. 어떤 행사를 하는데 내용을 알고 싶다면 What’s the purpose of this event? 또는 What’s this event all about?라고 질문할 수 있다.
