오늘 살필 곡은 '85년 발표된 Knee Deep In The Hoopla에 수록된 곡으로 우리에게도 잘 알려진 곡이지만 음악적으로는 worst song of all times로 꼽히는 등 많은 비난을 받은 곡이랍니다. 이 외에도 영화 '마네킹'의 OST인 Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now 등을 불렀답니다.

■ Knee deep in the hoopla

물이 무릎까지 차 오르는 걸 두고 knee deep이라고 해서 We are standing knee deep in the water라고 하기도 하고, 무릎까지 차는 거라 shallow라는 의미로도 쓰입니다. 하지만 여기서는 She is knee deep in her work처럼 deeply involved라는 의미로 쓰인 것 같습니다. Hoopla에 푹 빠져있다고 하는 것 같죠. Hoopla는 고리를 던져서 막대에 꽂는 게임의 일종이죠. Ring Toss라고 하기도 합니다. 어릴 때 많이 하던 놀이인데 아주 재미있기 때문에 요란하고 시끌 벅적한 것을 두고 hoopla를 쓰기도 합니다. The usual hoopla surrounded the arrival of the pop star.

이 노래는 한때는 함께 rock’n’ roll을 즐기고 놀았던 친구가 사회 생활을 시작하며 어릴 때 즐기던 음악도 이제는 질이 낮다고 무시하고 살기 위해 사회의 인습에 젖어 들어 사는 것을 두고 슬퍼하고 약간은 비꼬고 있는 것 같습니다.

■ Marconi plays the mamba

무선 전신 (wireless telegraph), 즉 radio를 개발한 사람은 이태리 출신의 Guglielmo Marconi였습니다. Marconi를 통해 19세기 라디오 발전이 가능하게 되었죠. 그가 세운 전신 회사 Marconi Company는 20세기 중반 영국의 English Electric에 팔리고 그 후 GEC에 합병됐죠. 여기서는 Radio 대신 라디오 개발의 선두주자였던 Marconi라는 이름을 쓴 것 같습니다.

Mamba는 아프리카에 사는 독사의 일종이라고 합니다. 이 노래에서는 그냥 mamba라는 춤의 일종이나 노래의 이름 같죠. 흥분되고 신나는 음악을 틀어주고 있다고 생각하면 될 것 같습니다. 이 곡은 당시 Bay Area Power-Rock Station이던 KSAN-FM 라디오 방송을 들으며 영감을 받아 쓰인 곡이라고 합니다. 젊은이들의 취향에 맞게 신나고 경쾌한 곡들로 채워져 있었기 때문에 이 노래에서는 이런 말을 하고 있는 것 같습니다.

■ They call us irresponsible, write us off the page

기성 세대는 젊은 세대를 보면 항상 못 마땅하고 걱정이 되나 봅니다. 여기서도 irresponsible이라고 하며 혀를 차고 있는 것 같죠. Many people worry that teens are so irresponsible처럼 자기 일에 책임을 지지 못하는 것을 두고 irresponsible이라고 하죠. 반대로 행동에 대해 책임을 진다고 할 때는 be responsible for your actions을 쓰죠. Mary was depressed and therefore not fully responsible for her own actions.

단체나 누군가에게 뭘 보내달라고 요청할 때 write off를 써서 Did you write off for tickets?라고 합니다. 이 외에도 They will write off any criminal acts처럼 erase, cancel의 의미가 있습니다. 이 노래처럼 사람을 write off 시킨다고 하면 dismiss someone, 혹은 중요치 않다고 여기고 알려고 하지도 않을 경우를 말합니다. A lot of companies seem to write people off if they’re over 50.

■ Police have got the chokehold,

목에 뭔가 걸려서 숨을 쉴 수 없을 때, choke를 써서 She choked to death on a fish bone이라고 합니다. 이 외에도 뭔가 가득 차다 (fill)는 뜻으로도 써서 At lunchtime the streets were choked with traffic이라고 합니다. 무슨 일을 하다 갑자기 자신감이나 용기를 잃어 하지 못할 때에도 He could score points at will during the qualifying matches, but in the final he completely choked라고 하죠. 가끔 화가 나거나 슬프지만 그런 감정을 억누를 때, choke back을 써서 Choking back my anger, I tried to speak calmly라고 합니다.

Chokehold는 숨을 쉴 수 없을 만큼 목을 꽉 졸라매는 모양을 나타내는 말로 흔히 레슬링의 목 조르기를 생각하면 됩니다. 이 노래에서는 단지 음악을 사랑하는 젊은이들인데 경찰들에게 잡혀서 목을 졸리고 검문을 당하는 자신들의 모습을 이야기하고 있는 것 같죠. 겉모습만 보고 판단하는 건 문화를 뛰어 넘는 현상 같네요.

■ Here's your favorite radio station

라디오는 앞에서 살핀 것처럼 19세기 말 발명되어 1920년경에 현재 우리가 듣는 음성을 들을 수 있는 라디오가 됩니다. 이런 라디오를 방송하는 곳을 radio station이라고 하죠. 전통적으로 공기 중에 radio wave를 내 보내 antenna를 통해 수신을 합니다. 이런 방식으로 우리가 아는 AM과 FM으로 나뉘죠. 영어 방송을 들으시면 자신의 방송을 소개하는 멘트를 들으실 거에요. You’re listening to Radio Gold, broadcasting 24 hours a day on 909 AM.

AM은 amplitude modulation의 약자로 signal이 대기 중으로 나가는 방식을 말합니다. Short waves이기 때문에 단순하고 받기가 쉽죠. 하지만 기상 변화에 영향을 많이 받고 저녁에는 잘 안 들리는 단점이 있죠. 이에 반해 FM (frequency modulation)은 기상 변화에 영향을 받지 않고 스테레오 음질을 들을 수 있어 선진국에서 많이 사용되고 있답니다. 최근에는 영국, 독일 등에서 digital radio station이 생겨나고 있는데 인터넷 발전과 함께 앞으로 가장 큰 매체가 될 것으로 기대되고 있답니다.
