| Ryoo Seung-beom's, newly released film “Crying Fist (주먹이 운다)” portrays the story of a 19-year-old boxer, Sang-hwan, who turns to boxing to release his rage and frustration. In the course of his fighting, he manages to alter his life forever.
“Crying Fist.” has significant meaning for Ryoo, not only because the film is directed by his older brother, Ryoo Seung-wan (who he consequently already made three movies with) but because Ryoo, co-stars with one of Korea's greatest actors, Choi Min-sik.
Here, Ryoo talks about the film and what it was like filming with his older brother again and one of Korea's biggest stars.
Q: It's known that you hesitated taking a part in “Crying Fist.” What made you finally accept the offer?
Ryoo: It was not an easy decision to work with the same director over and over again because I was worried my acting would be limited in scope. But while I was talking with the director, I fell in love with the character and decided to play the part.
Q: You must have felt a lot of pressure co-starring with one of Korea's greatest actors Choi Min-sik.
Ryoo: It's somewhat true that I was overwhelmed at first by his presence. But the pressure didn’t come from the competitive nature of looking better than him but from the responsibility that I should not become a burden to the film. Filming with such a great actor like Choi will only be a big help to my career. I learned a lot from him.
Q: Playing a boxer might have been hard. What were some of the more difficult aspects of portraying a boxer?
Ryoo: You may notice when you watch the film that we tried to describe the match as realistically as possible. The hardest thing in playing a boxer was, of course, that I had to devote a lot of time to training and I had to lose weight and stay in shape. You might think a three-minute-long bout is nothing. But it's enormously exhausting.
Q: What's your favorite scene in the film?
Ryoo: The boxing competition with Choi and hugging the grandmother after that match were the most memorable scenes for me.
Q: Your character in “Crying Fist” seems different from the other characters you’re portrayed in previous films. Did you intentionally try to change your image?
Ryoo: I believe everyone has various facets to their personality. I just think another hidden part of me was revealed by the director in this film.
Q: The dreadlocks you had in the film was really impressive. What was it like having such a hairstyle?
Ryoo: It takes a lot of effort and patience to get dreadlocks. It takes a long time to dry it. In summer it smells bad and I had to continuously scratch my head. I once braided my hair when I was younger. If you don't have much patience, never attempt to get dreadlocks (laughs). There is a good side to having dreadlocks; you don't need a pillow when you sleep (laughs).
Q: What was your dream when you were young?
Ryoo: I had a dream of becoming a musician, but I gave up on it early after I realized I'm not really good at it. Now I'm just pleased to be the actor Ryoo Seung-bum. Acting is like a calling to me.
