| Do you remember the pride and delight that was roused in Korea when Park Chan-wook won the jury prize at last year? Cannes International Film Festival? The acclaimed filmmaker won the award for his film Old Boy. That year, many people also expected Korean actor Choi Min-sik to win best actor for his role in the same film. However, he was beaten by an unknown 14-year-old Japanese boy called Yagira Yuya. Yuya impressed the judges for his role in Nobody Knows (아무도 모른다),
a true story about a family of four abandoned children living in Tokyo. Prior to the films release in Korea, the young actor visited Seoul for the first time to talk about his blossoming acting career, his favorite films and actors and last year's awful mid-term exam results.
Question: This is your first visit to Korea. What are your first impressions?
Yuya: I was so happy and excited to receive enthusiastic praise from the audience at the film's premier. I really appreciated it.
Q: Has your winning the Best Actor Award at the Cannes changed anything in your life and career?
Yuya: I used to dream of becoming a soccer player. But after winning the award, I received many offers to star in films and decided to make a living as an actor. Now, I'm delighted to be filming my second movie.
Q: You weren't able to go to the awards ceremony at last year's Cannes festival due to your mid-term exams. Did the exams go well?
Yuya: No, I bombed the tests. The grades were awful (laughs).
Q: In your film Nobody Knows, you take the responsibility of taking care of three siblings and lead a very tough life. What would you do if you were in the same situation in real life?
Yuya: I'm not sure if I could do as well as Akira does in the film. But I would definitely do my best to look after my brothers and sisters.
Q: Have you ever seen a Korean film before? And if you have, what was your favorite?
Yuya: I enjoyed watching Joint Security Area (공동경비구역) starring Lee Byung-hun.
Q: Both Choi Min-sik, who was also a nominee for Best Actor at last year's Cannes Festival, and Lee Byung-hun have films coming out on the same day as yours. How does that make you feel?
Yuya: Yes, I've heard that. Lee's performance in JSA was very impressive. But I hope Korean movie fans also watch Nobody Knows.
Q: What kind of movies do you like? Do you have any role models?
Yuya: I like action movies and I adore Jackie Chan as an actor. But that doesn't necessarily mean I want to become an action star. I would like to become an actor like Ken Watanabe, who starred in The Last Samurai (라스트 사무라이). Korean actor Bae Yong-joon's smile is really impressive and I would like to have one like that, too.
Q: Why did you want to visit Korea?
Yuya: I have been very interested in Korea because the Korean Wave (한류) is now sweeping Japan. Before I came to Korea, I wanted to eat Korean food like Kimchi and Bulgogi a lot. Unfortunately, I had no time to go sightseeing due to my tight schedule. I would like to come again sometime in the near future.
