첫째 예문과 같이 to-부정사 to change의 목적어 the battery가 이 부정사 뒤에 있을 때는
부정사가 능동형 to change가 쓰인다. 그러나 to-부정사의 목적어인 the battery가 이 부정
사의 주어 자리로 이동하면 둘째 예문처럼 수동부정사 to be changed로 바뀐다.
2. a) Please let me know about your arrival when you get there.
b) As soon as you get there, please let me know about your arrival.
‘거기 도착하면’은 when∼get there, as soon as∼get there로 옮긴다.
‘도착했다고’는 전치사구 about one’s arrival로 옮기며 about은 전치사이고 명사구 one’s
arrival은 전치사의 목적어이다.
‘∼에게 알려주다’는 let∼know∼로 옮긴다.
3. a) No politician can satisfy all his people.
b) There’s no politician that can satisfy all the people.
‘어떤 정치가도 ∼아닌’은 명사구 no politician으로 옮기며 no는 한정사의 하나인 양화사
이고 politician은 명사이다.
‘모든 국민’은 한국어 원문에서‘그의 모든 국민’을 뜻하는 것으로 보아 all his people, all
the people로 옮긴다. 명사구 all his people 대신 his all people로 옮겨서는 안 된다. 양화사
가 소유격 앞에 와야 하기 때문이다. 마찬가지로 명사구 all the people 대신 the all people로
옮겨서는 안 된다. 양화사가 관사 앞에 와야 하기 때문이다.
II. 폼나게 마무리
1. 나는 너를 기쁘게 해 주고 싶지만 그럴 여유가 없다.
