명사 + 현재분사/과거분사
신문체의 특징은 간결함에 있다. 이를 위해 긴 단어를 짧게 압축하거나 관계대명사를 생략하는 수가 많다. 여기서는 관계대명사 대신 현재분사 또는 과거분사를 사용함으로써 긴 문장을 짧게 압축한 경우를 다루겠다. 즉, 명사 다음 “관계대명사 + be동사“가 생략된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그 사례를 아래와 같이 살펴보자.
Samsung chairman told the executives attending the ground-breaking ceremony.
(=Samsung chairman told the executives who were attending the ground-breaking ceremony.)
삼성회장은 착공식에 참석한 임원들에게 연설을 하였다.
*주의: 과거진행형 were +ing
*ground-breaking ceremony 기공식, 착공식 cf. 완공식 completion ceremony
The boys being chosen for the team are under 9.
(=The boys who are being chosen for the team are under 9.)
그 팀을 위해 선발될 소년들은 9세 미만이다. *주의: 현재진행형 are + ing
The book published last week is his first book.
(=The book which was published last week is his first book.)
