오늘 살펴볼 Colors of the Wind는 1995년 디즈니에서 제작된 애니메이션 Pocahontas에 수록된 곡으로 그 해 아카데미 시상식과 그래미 어워드 등에서 최우수 영화음악상을 수상한 곡입니다. 영화 속에서는 Judy Jukn이 Pocahontas의 목소리로 불렀고 엔딩 크래딧에서는 가수이자 배우인 Vanessa Williams가 또 다른 버전으로 불러 50만장이 팔린 히트 싱글이 되기도 했습니다. 이 노래에서 native American인 Pocahontas는 영국 군인 John Smith에게 자연과 대지의 경의로움에 대해 설명하면서, 외모나 문화가 다른 인간들을 인정하고 받아들일 것을 호소하고 있습니다.

'모든 돌과 나무, 피조물에겐 생명이 있고 영혼이 있으며, 각각의 이름이 있다'는 Pocahontas의 말은 인디언들의 세계관이기도 한 animism(애니미즘)을 나타내는 말입니다. 우리말로 '정령신앙, 물신숭배'라고 하기도 합니다. 이와 관계 있는 단어가 바로 animation인데요, '생기, 활기' 등을 뜻하는 단어이지만 요즘에는 이 Pocahontas와 같은 만화영화를 지칭하는 표현으로 우리에게 더 익숙합니다. 이는 단어의 1차적인 뜻처럼 생명감 있는 동작뿐만 아니라 비·바람·불 같은 자연현상과 기계적인 움직임 등의 표현을 모두 포함합니다. Animation과 animism의 어원은 '생명을 불어 넣다, 활기를 띠게 하다'를 뜻하는 라틴어 animatus에서 유래했습니다.

All the riches에서 riches는 보통 복수로 쓰여 '부(wealth), 재물, 풍부함' 등을 뜻하는데, 여기서는 영화 속 이 노래를 부르는 장면을 볼 때 Pocahontas와 John Smith를 둘러싼 '대자연'을 의미합니다.
