In 2006, an American soldier in Iraq begged engineers in his unit, ¡°Please fix Scooby Doo because he saved my life.¡± ¡°Scooby Doo¡± was the soldier¡¯s nickname for his unit¡¯s PackBot EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), a robot that had successfully defused thirty-five roadside bombs. It had done its job so well that its operators considered it a member of the team, and on its latest mission, it had sustained serious damage. Unfortunately, the technicians were unable to save Scooby Doo. But there are two thousand more PackBots in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they are only one success story in the burgeoning field of life-saving robotics.
 
The PackBot¡¯s manufacturer, a US company called iRobot, began developing the device in 1998 after winning a US Department of Defense contract. An early version of the robot first came to the public¡¯s attention after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when it was used to search for survivors at the World Trade Center. The PackBot line is now a diverse one: besides the EOD, it includes the new 510, a multi-function, portable version weighing only forty pounds and controlled with a game-style joystick.
 
The need for robots that we can send into life-threatening situations is not limited to the battlefield, however. This became distressingly clear in March of this year, when two PackBot 510s became the first robots to enter the tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. They provided early confirmation of dangerously high levels of radiation. A British defense firm also deployed a radiation-sensing robot and a remote-controlled earth mover to help workers at the site clear debris from a relatively safe distance. In future disasters like Fukushima, emergency workers hope to be able to minimize the death toll with search-and-rescue models like the new Robocue. Initially designed for the Yokohama police department, the remote-controlled vehicle features an infrared camera for finding the injured and a conveyor belt capable of pulling them inside to be carried to safety¡ªwhile monitoring their vital signs. Its maker wants every fire department in Japan to have one.
 
Fire-fighting robotics has become a global industry unto itself. A Korean company has introduced a light, wheeled model called Fire Spy, designed to roll through a burning building and seek out anyone trapped inside while towing an active water hose. Another new fire-fighting robot is the aptly named Anna Konda, a snake-like device with twenty-two joints that allow it to maneuver through narrow spaces. Powered by hydraulic valves, this robot from a Norwegian firm can pump water at an impressive 1450 pounds per square inch, a significantly higher pressure than that of the average fire hose.
 
We may never be able to do without bomb disposal teams, firefighters, and other emergency workers who risk their lives every day. ¡áBut progress in life-saving robotics has been rapid over the last decade, and it is expected to accelerate. ¡á The next frontier: medicine. ¡á Researchers believe that nano robots will one day be able to enter the human body to deliver drugs and make repairs at the cellular level. ¡á
