오늘 살펴볼 곡은 비틀즈의 1969년 싱글 앨범과 1970년 정규 앨범 Let It Be에 수록된 곡 Across the Universe입니다. 존 레논이 작사·작곡하고 리드 보컬을 맡았는데, 그의 진심을 가장 잘 표현한(heartfelt) 곡이자 가장 아름다운 곡 중 하나로 평가 받고 있습니다.
이 곡은 비틀즈의 다른 곡들처럼 David Bovie, Rufus Wainwright 등 수 많은 뮤지션들에 의해 리메이크되었습니다. 그 중에서도 1998년 영화 플레전트 빌(Pleasantville)에 삽입된 피오나 애플(Fiona Apple)이 부른 버전은 독특하고 몽환적인 분위기로 영화가 만들어진 지 8년이나 지난 지금까지도 많은 사람들에게 사랑 받고 있습니다.
■ Pools of sorrow, waves of joy
이 곡을 작사 작곡한 존 레논은 1967년 그의 첫 아내인 신시아 파웰(Cynthia Powll)과 헤어지게 되었는데, 어느날 밤 ‘슬픔의 웅덩이와 기쁨의 물결(Pools of sorrow, waves of joy)’이라는 구절이 갑자기 떠올라(popped into his mind) 무언가에 홀린 것처럼 종이와 연필을 들고 급하게 가사를 써내려 갔고, 다 쓰고 나서는 가사에 대해 까맣게 잊은 채 잠들었다고 합니다.
가사를 살펴보면 추상적인 개념들을 시각적인 심상으로 구체화한 표현들이 유난히 많습니다. 이를테면, 생각이 ‘굽이쳐 흐른다’(thoughts “meandering”), 말이 ‘미끄러진다’(words “slithering”), 불멸의 사랑이 ‘빛난다’(undying love “shining”) 등의 표현이 나옵니다.
■ Are drifting through my open mind
Drift는 동사와 명사로 쓰여 ‘표류하다, 표류’라는 뜻이며, 형용사형은 adrift인데 보통 drifting이라는 동명사형으로도 많이 쓰입니다. 수면이나 공기 중에 떠있는 상태를 말하는데, 다음과 같이 다양한 표현에 적용할 수 있습니다. The vessel drifted about[was adrift] six days.(그 배는 6일 간 표류했다.) The snow drift covers the sign.(바람으로 쌓인 눈더미가 표지판을 덮고 있다.) They drifted farther and farther apart from each other.(그들은 점점 서로 사이가 멀어졌다.)
마음이 넓은 사람을 표현할 때 ‘오픈 마인드’라고 하죠. 형용사로 open-minded는 ‘편견 없는, 허심탄회한, 포용력 있는’이라는 뜻입니다. Open은 형용사로 ‘열린, 널따란, 펼쳐진, 공개의, 솔직한’ 등의 뜻이 있습니다. ‘Open country’는 ‘널다란 땅’이고 ‘open field’는 ‘광활한 들판, 평야’입니다. 여기서는 시각적인 은유가 많이 쓰였으니, open mind를 광활한 평야에 비유해서 이런 마음의 평야에 슬픔과 기쁨이 떠다니는 상상을 하면 이해하기 쉬울 듯 합니다.
■ Jai guru de va om
작사 당시 비틀즈의 다른 멤버들과 초월 명상(Transcendental Menditaion)에 심취해있던 존 레논은 mantra―만트라, (불교·힌두교의) 기도, 진언, 주문―를 적어넣었는데, 그 의미는 산스크리트 어로 ‘선지자여, 진정한 깨달음을 주소서’라고 합니다. 이 만트라는 각 절과 후렴 사이를 이어주는 역할을 하고 있습니다. He added the mantra to the piece, which served as a link between the bridge and verse.
■ Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box
‘생각이 우체통 안으로 끊임없이 불어 드는 바람처럼 굽이쳐 흐른다’는 표현입니다. Meander는 ‘굽이쳐 흐르다, 정처 없이 헤매다’라는 뜻입니다. 발음은 ‘미앤더’에 가깝고 강세는 두 번째 음절에 있죠. 이 단어는 소아시아의 고대 국가였던 프리지아(Phrygia)를 흐르는 강 이름이자 그리스 신화에 나오는 강의 신 멘데레스(Menderes)에서 유래했다고 합니다. S자가 이어진 모양으로 굽이굽이 흐르는 강물을 떠올리시면 됩니다. The river meanders along with many twists and turns.(강이 평야를 굽이쳐 흐른다.) 이런 시각적인 의미를 적용시켜, ‘이야기가 두서없이 산만하게 진행되다’라는 뜻도 있습니다. His talk appears to meander but by the end focuses attention on the true state of affairs.(그의 이야기는 두서없어 보이지만 결국에는 정확한 사태에 집중하고 있다.)
명사와 형용사로 쓰이는 meandering은 ‘구불구불한 길, 정처 없이 거닐기, 두서없이 이야기하기’라는 뜻과 ‘곡류하는, 정처 없이 떠도는, 두서없이 이야기하는’ 이라는 뜻이 있습니다. 한가롭게 천천히 도는 자전거 타기는 long meandering bike rides라고 합니다.
Restless는 쉼(rest) 없는(less), 즉 ‘끊임없는, 침착하지 못한, 들떠있는, 불안한(uneasy), 잠 못 이루는’이라는 뜻입니다. He？s a restless type ― he never stays in one country for long.(그는 좀처럼 가만히 있지 못하는 타입이라 절대 한 나라에 오래 머무르지 않는다.) She spent a restless night, tossing and turning.(그녀는 뒤척이며 잠 못 이루는 밤을 보냈다.)
