| 8,90년대를 주름잡던 래퍼 MC Hammer(Stanley Kirk Burrell, 1962년 Oakland출생)는 어릴 때 야구를 하며 당시 홈런왕이던 Hammerin’ Hank Aaron과 비슷하게 생겼다고 얻은 별명이라고 합니다. 그만큼 야구를 좋아했지만 스카우트 되지 못해 해군으로 입대합니다. 제대 후 음악 활동을 시작, 88년 1집 앨범 Let’s Get It Started는 3백만장 이상 팔리는 기염을 토하며 랩 음악을 미국 음악의 중심부로 옮기는데 큰 역할을 합니다. 계속되는 성공과 화려한 생활 후 95년 발표한 앨범이 실패하며 파산하고 사람들의 조롱거리로 전락하기도 했답니다. 그러나 비난과 욕설의 흑인 랩 음악이 아닌 로맨틱하고 다소 깨끗한 랩으로 그에 대한 평가가 나뉘기도 합니다. 인생의 바닥을 쳤음에도 굴하지 않고 계속 음악을 하고 있고, 목사로도 활동하고 있는 조금은 특이한 가수죠. 오늘 살펴볼 곡은 우리나라 휴대폰 광고에도 쓰이면서 많이 알려진 곡입니다.

Wet! Don’t touch!처럼 손으로 만지는 것을 두고 touch를 쓰죠. 그 외에도 She pushed the two bookcases together until they touched처럼 `서로 맞닿는다, 가깝다’는 뜻으로도 사용합니다. 감동 받았다고 할 때도, He was touched that you remembered his birthday로 사용하죠. 그 외에도 남과 다른 특별한 능력을 말할 때 He used to be a good writer, but I think he’s losing his touch를 쓴답니다. ‘조금’의 양을 말할 때도 Would you like milk? -Just a touch’라고 하죠.
약간의 손질을 해서 좀 더 낫게 만들 때, touch up을 써서 She touched up her lipstick and brushed her hair라고 합니다. 요즘에는 성적으로 만지는 것을 두고도 feel up, 혹은 she claimed that he had tried to touch her up이라고 하죠. 손으로 만졌을 때의 느낌을 강조할 때 to the touch를 써서 The material was soft to the touch라고도 합니다.
■ A super dope homeboy from the Oaktown
가끔 뉴스에 도핑 테스트를 한다는 말이 나오죠. They were arrested for selling dope처럼 마약, 법적으로 금지된 약물을 두고 dope을 씁니다. 사람한테 dope을 쓰면 stupid하다는 의미로 you shouldn’t have told him, you dope!과 같이 쓰인답니다. Slang으로 쓰이면 good, cool하다는 의미나 information으로 쓰이기도 하기 때문에 문맥에 맞춰 해석을 하면 됩니다. 이 노래는 그냥 `끝내주는 녀석’ 정도로 해석하면 될 것 같네요.
Homeboy는 같은 고향 친구를 뜻하거나 gang에서 같이 활동하는 동료를 말한다고 하네요. MC Hammer는 Oakland출신으로 Oakland를 Oaktown으로 말하기도 한다고 합니다. 미국 내에서도 Oakland라는 지명이 많지만 흔히 Oakland라고 하면 California에 있는 도시를 생각하면 됩니다. Oaktown은 살인이 가장 많은 도시라는 오명과 함께 마약, 갱들이 많아서 위험한 곳이라고 생각하는 사람들도 많다고 하네요.
■ You know let me bust the funky lyrics
Bust는 상당히 informal한 표현으로 Oh no! I’ve bust his CD player처럼 break something의 뜻으로 많이 쓰입니다. 또, slang적인 표현으로 범죄자를 arrest할 때에도 the police busted him because they think he’s involved with a terrorist group처럼 쓰이기도 합니다. 동상이나 조각 중에 가슴까지 만든 것을 두고 bust라고 하기도 하죠. There was a bust of Mahler on his desk. 여성의 가슴, 혹은 가슴 둘레를 말하기도 합니다. I couldn’t find anything in the shop in my bust size. 이 노래에서는 문자적인 해석보다는 그냥 끝내주는 노래를 만든다는 정도로 이해하면 될 것 같네요.
연인과 크게 싸우고 관계를 정리할 때 bust up을 써서 She’s bust up with Carlos라고 하기도 합니다. 사업 등이 재정 문제로 파산하거나 문을 닫을 때에는 go bust를 써서 More than twenty companies in the district went bust during the last three months를 쓴답니다.
■ You talk about the Hammer
Rap음악은 상당히 자유분방하게 자신의 생각을 표현하는 장르 같습니다. 음악에 맞춰 자신의 이야기를 풀어나가는 것을 두고 rapping 혹은 MCing이라고 하죠. 70년대 hip-hop음악이 등장하면서 hip hop에 꼭 들어가야 하는 한 부분으로 자리잡았습니다. 초기에는 흑인들이 불렀기 때문에 rap이라고 하면 흑인 음악으로 알고 있지만 요즘은 많이 변하고 있는 추세랍니다. Rap을 싫어하는 사람들은 sex, drug, money, cops 등에 대한 이야기만 한다고 싸구려, 쓰레기라고 말하기도 하죠. 하지만 Will Smith나 Usher, MC Hammer처럼 건전한 rap을 한 rapper들도 꽤 있답니다.
Hammer는 자신의 음악에 Stop! Hammer Time!이란 구문을 자주 써서 초기에는 cool하다는 느낌으로 쓰였지만 요즘은 누군가 자기에게 짜증을 나게 했을 때, 화를 내는 표현으로 hammer time이라고 말하기도 합니다. 망치로 때려 죽이고 싶다는 과격한 의미이기 때문에 조심해서 써야 한답니다.
■ That's hyped and tight
Hype은 TV나 뉴스 등 media에서 계속 광고를 해서 꼭 사야만 하거나 해야 할 것처럼 만드는 것을 말합니다. Playstation같은 게임기가 나오면 남자들 중에 꼭 사야 한다고 하는 사람들이 있죠. 이런 것을 두고 hype이라고 합니다. There’s been a lot of hype around his latest film. 또 drug addict를 두고 hype이라고 부르기도 합니다. 침착하지 못할 만큼 흥분한 경우 hyped up을 써서 he gets really hyped up when he’s playing video games라고 합니다. 혹은 great, superb의 뜻으로 쓰이기도 합니다.
Hyped and tight이라고 마지막 발음이 /t/로 끝나게 말을 맞춘 것 같네요. 굳이 문자적으로 해석하기 보다는 손에 땀이 날 정도로 끝내준다는 정도로 해석하면 될 것 같습니다. 여기서 tight은 Did you see his ride? It was tight처럼 cool, stylish란 의미로 쓰였죠.
